I have never had one before, so I am a little leary of it; especially a 7 year old one. Are they dependable?

I go rock climbing in remote areas, where I am away for hours. I hate putting my keys in my pack because I am frequently away from that also, and I sure don't want it in my pocket. It would be great if I could leave it in the Explorer and get in with the keyless entry; but if it didn't work, I would have real problems. So, is it dependable?

Thanks.

yes. I have had my truck since 97 and have never had a problem

As long as you do 2 things, it will be dependable
1. remeber the code
2. remember to switch off headlights

If the battery goes, well so do the power locks.
Mine has never failed
Another idea
Hide your keys on the trail, under a rock.
Or is this small town guy too trusting?

ummmm ya, we have never used the keyless entry.....reason, my dad forgot it, and when i bought the truck from him he had lost the card with the number on it.

The code is printed on a label which is on the alarm box. You can see it if you remove the jack compartment cover, and look inside the rear panel towards the front.
Funny, we were talking about this subject in another thread, but beleive me you don't want to go there

Ditto, I use mine all the time when we go out in the boat...no issues ever.

Never had a problem. I use mine daily. But, now that I said that tomorrow it prolly won't work. Thanks

Just get a key cut and zip tie it somewhere out of site under the truck. Then in the unlikely event the keyless entry doesn't work you can still get in.

I have had no problems whatsoever with my '95. Just make sure to wipe off the keypad occasionally so that telltale dust won't give someone an idea as to your code.

It is good unless you leave your keys in the truck and the battery dies. I wish that my remote worked when the truck is running-my f150's does.

THanks good buddy. Ill look in there when i get home. :D

You may want to have a helper pull on the panel and hold the flashlight. It's not the easiest thing to look in and see.

I use the one on my 98 daily. In fact, I just used it an hour and a half ago at the gas station. I'm paranoid of it failing with the keys in it and the engine running, so when I need to let the engine run, I lock it FROM the keypad as well, just to be sure it works.

Plus, I know I can break in with a coat hanger in about 3 minutes if necessary. :)

How? Might be useful some day...

Two ways: Pry the lower left hand corner of the rear window out and reach around with the coat hanger and hit the unlock button, or use the coat hanger the same way a locksmith or police officer would use a slim-jim. (in the door through the window seal)

This question is really nagging me, is it really a good idea to tell everyone how to break into an explorer lol.

True.... you have a point and I've raised the same question here myeslf. However both methods have been posted on here repeatedly in other messages. Both methods are commonly used by law enforcement and locksmiths coming to the aid of stranded motorists. Both methods can be used (in some form or another) in numerous different vehicles. Both methods are common solutions to getting into just about any vehicle.

Now, telling someone how to PICK a lock, or break into a house..... that might be a bit over the line. :P

I've got a '99 I bought new and now has 170k miles driven daily and never tried to figure the uses, but I use it every time, so that's well over 5,000 times I've used it. It's never failed me yet.
