So there was no airflow through the defroster. Airflow through all the other vents. Heat and A/C okay, too.

My husband stuck his hand behind the console (using the opening next to the gas pedal) and found a dangling arm/lever. Blindly, he was able to re-connect the arm back into its original place. He said the end was D shaped.

Now we have some defroster airflow. Actually, it’s on all the time no matter what the setting. The volume of airflow to the defroster can be increased or decrease by opening or closing the regular vents.

What did he just do?

Hi Jon! We've both previously checked out that thread and don't think that's the issue.

We just replaced the actuator that's behind the glove box, and we're thinking about fixing the rear window that no longer works, as well as worrying about the rear-end shimmy. We're both a little mentally taxed at this point and might have missed something so we'll read it again.

He's pretty convinced it's not the vacuum lines. He checked everything over, with the exception of the reservoir ball. Is there an easy way to see it? It looks like a real project. If it's just removing the few bolts I can see I might be able to convince him it's worth his time.

If you can see the coolant bypass valve, which is under the hood near the firewall in the coolant lines to the heater core, watch it while he switches the vent function to all positions. You should see the plunger on it move if the vacuum lines are tight. if not, then there may be a vacuum issue. The vent function switching is done by vacuum.

He might disconnect that lever he connected, and see if it will move when vent function is switched. I wonder if that linkage could be installed "upside down" ???

Oh, what a great tip on the vacuum issue. We'll check out the bypass valve tomorrow.

Any idea what that arm attached to? I wish I could find an exploded view of that part of the console but I only seem to run across 2002+ diagrams. I'll keep looking.
