How do I know if my explorer's engine is a V6 SOHC? I can't check right now because, some 80 year-old guy rear ended me going 35 mph while i was going back to school during lunch.

What year, and model is it? State whatever info you know about your car. You can also check your drive's side door.

What year is it? SOHC didn't come out until the '97 model year. Do you have an automatic or manual? Until very recently, the SOHC came with an automatic only. What is the 8th digit of your Vin (check your insurance card)? E=SOHC, X=OHV. Lift the hood and look at the black plastic piece covering the top of the engine. It will say "SOHC" if it is.

Another way to tell if your Explorer has the SOHC engine is if it makes an annoying rattling sound (cam tensioners!) at start up! HA!

Hey Jeff, the newer OHV's make a similar noise too, so it's not just the SOHC's. Something to do with offset wrist pins making the OHV sound like a diesel!

Great. Even if I trade my Explorer for a new one it will still sound terrible! All kidding aside, I love my Explorer, I just hate the horrible sound it makes at start up. Oh well, small sacrifice!

What is the difference between the SOHC and the normal V6, besides having more HP?

SOHC=Single Over Head Cam
One cam over each bank of cylinders

OHV=Over Head Valves
One cam with push rods

In addition to what 2001ExpSport said, 50 more horsepower, 15 more ft/lb of torque, revs to 6000 RPM vs. 5200.

I know my engine is an OHV and not an SOHC, I think it tells you some where on the engine. The picture that I will include in this post will clear everything up!

*Just wanted to add, I am damn proud of my OHV, it works hard and takes a lot of crap from me, and I can spin the tires on demand to get arise out of people when needed (modified of course!!)*
