The 2000 has a 5R55E 5 speed transmission. I thought that you had a 95 Explorer? Could you update your profile to say 2000 Explorer along with your location? There is another link under your profile that says vehicle specs where you could add additional information.

OK...I have the same question...

I have just purchased a '97 with the SOHC 4.0L 6 cylinder engine. It's the XLT Trim Package with "Controltrac".

Which transmission is in my vehicle?

BTW...great site! Looking forward to learning more about my Explorer...and hopefully contributing to this site / community through the process.

i have a 99 explorer xlt and im trying to figure out which tranny i have. how can i figure this out?

First of all this site is awesome! My question is this:
I have a 2002 Explorer XLT with the 4.0 V-6. The original motor was replaced 2 years ago (timing chain)with a 4.0 from a wrecked 1997 Eddie Bauer. I kept the 2002 Transmission in the truck. The door code says Transmission is a "V" which I believe based on reading this forum to be a 5r55s. Now the transmission is blown. I have 1 forward gear and reverse left. I kept the 1997 transmission. I believe it to be a 5r55E. The wrecked 1997 body was junked so I dont have access to the door code. How can I tell if the 1997 transmission is indeed a 5r55E and can I swap it into my 2002? Will the computer recognize it and shift it?
Thanks!!!

Reviving old thread since there is so much conflicting info.

Door plate has a V, so that indicates 5R55S
yet most places say it should have a W.

Trust the door plate or look at trans?

Also I've been searching but can't find a spec on testing the solenoids before buying a pack.

I knows it's either the solenoids or the bores, anyone suggest best way to figure out which?

Thanks

Does anybody know how to check if there vehicles transmission has been replaced? I wanna check, I have 97 Ford Explorer SOHC 4.0 V6

Thanks all.

Even if by chance it is the original transmission, there's no telling if it's been rebuilt or not.

If it's a new transmission chances are there are no marks, if it's a JY tranny it may have marks, but it may not; my JY transmission came with a tag attached to one of the bolt holes so there's no physical markings on it.

I don't know much about vehicles but I need to ask a straight yes or no question. If my boyfriend wants to ask additional ?s he can later. Will a 05 Ford ranger transmission fit into a eddie Bauer 2000 Ford explorer?

Will a Ford explorer year 2000 with a 5.0 engine have a 5R55E transmission?
