How do you change the wiper park position?

My driver side wiper parks very low, and the passenger parks on the windshield cowl. I removed the wiper arms, but it looks like they can only go on one way. Is there any way to change the park position so they won't hit the cowl?

The shaft for the wipers has very fine splines on it--you should be able to move it a tooth or 2 to the desired position.

u said u pulled the wiper arms thus u know the whole procedure for that (Really easy if anyone else is finding this thread for the 1st time)
1. Put arms "up" away from window
2. Find little black tab at base of wiper arm
3. Pull tab
4. Slide circular base off of rotating knob
to change where they park, just re-adjust how you slide the base onto the knob, usually ppl want a lower wiper arm so they rotate the base clockwise, u 2 want it higher so rotate the whole arm counterclockwise a tiny bit till it will slide back on in the desired position.
Good luck! this is a really easy mod that I figured out when drunk one night after chasing ppl around with my antenna...lol

If I remember on mine, the shaft or whatever is oblong/oval. And you cant adjust it like stated above. I will have to re check..

As was stated before, this technique doesn't work. The "rotating knobs" are oblong, and only fit into the wiper arms one way. The knob itself needs to be rotated.

I have a '96, they are not round but have a protrusion on one side so they will only go on one way. The Ford CD shows how to make some adjustments but to me they are not real clear.

My '96 has the oblong mount as well, but I'm still able to move it a tick or two and get them where I want em.

1. Remove windshield wiper pivot arm (17526) and windshield wiper blade (17528) assembly as described in this section.

2. Note: Prior to installation of windshield wiper pivot arm and windshield wiper blade, operate multi-function switch (13K359) to cycle linkage to the PARK position.

Locate windshield wiper pivot arm and windshield wiper blade assembly to installation position.

3. Install windshield wiper pivot arm on pivot shaft, apply downward pressure on base of windshield wiper pivot arm carefully until secure.

4. Lower windshield wiper pivot arm to windshield glass (03100).

5. Cycle windshield wiper system, check for proper operation.

I think you will find that there is a little bit of "play" in terms of the "adjustment"... certainly not as much as the "traditional full spline" wiper system on most vehicles. From what I can see on my 96, there is a "quarter spline" opposite the offset of the oblong drive. As you can see from the text in your post, there isn't much adjustment but I think that I can cause about a 1 inch difference by how the "splined end" it aligned.

If there isn't enough "adjustment", it sounds like your "wiper transmission" system is bend or worn... in which case you need to take it apart and see where the issue is.

Same question here. 1996 Explorer.

If the oblong thing to which the arm attaches is out of alignment, then there is very little adjustment available. I'd like my wipers to park higher so that they don't get frozen in as badly with ice, and the blade doesn't take such a severely curved "set" when parked in cold weather. If they rested higher on the windshield in the parked position, the blade would be flatter and not parked down so far into the ice on the windshield. At least getting them up onto the glass and not hanging down onto the rubber gasket for the windshield would be nice.

I'm wondering if there is an adjustment for the park position of the motor/gear assembly, or if one needs to adjust the linkage that attaches to the motor/gear assembly to achieve this.

I was really disappointed to find that this car doesn't have the normal round splined shaft to which the arms attach. With that setup, you can just rotate the arm to the desired position, stick it on there, put on the nut, and crank 'er down. The arrangement on this car takes that easy adjustment away from you.

I suspect your wiper transmission arms, or their bushings, are worn. The slop created by this is what may be causing you wipers to PARK to low. I do not believe there is anything that can be adjusted/modified inside the wiper motor to adjust the PARK position. After 23+ years of use stuff just wears out. IDK why Ford used oblong shafts for the older wipers, but it certainly makes the wiper arm adjustment more difficult/impossible.
