Hi everyone. I have been busy trying to get my explorer ready for the newly rebuilt tranny I am ordering. I have the exhaust off, the front and rear driveshafts done, transfer case out and am moving into the home stretch...

Did the starter tonight and went to get the TC (nuts) off the flexplate. Problem is that the plate takes a helluva effort to turn. I am averaging about one tooth every min. That is just nuts!!! Any ideas to help me finish the disassembly on this tranny? I know you are supposed to turn it clockwise.

If I end up getting more upset, I am going to get the old cutoff tool out and just take it all out on the converter housing. (My rebuilt doesn't require an exchange.) Please help!!!

Thanks.

Breaker bar on crank pulley? Take the plugs out too.

I was just going by what the Ford CD says to do...pretty much step by step. Going to join the Elite Explorers now.

(Excuse the newbie, but when the flexplate is turning all of the engine internals are too??? Sorry, but this is my first time with something this in-depth.)

Yes, the flexplate is turned by the crankshaft--it is bolted to it.
Thanks for the support--it is well worth it

Well---try to keep from laughing here, but I took the oil filter off when trying to get the exhaust out due to interference. And it has been drained for about a week. I suppose that is not helping things much. Guess that I should just go ahead and fill 'er up and put the filter back on.

Lesson learned there...

Also, don't think it would make a difference, but I have removed the fluid, filter, valve body (and reverse servo) to cut down on the weight when I pull this thing.

Thanks for your help so far.

Get a fly wheel tool it helps turn it.

Do they sell those at Harbor Frieght? I am going there tomorrow.

Can't you just put a socket and breaker bar on the crank pulley? The crank pulley is bolted to the other end of the crankshaft from the flywheel, and the TC is bolted to the flywheel, right?

And that is what I ended up doing...thanks everyone for your help!;)

2 things to note:

1====those flexplate to TC nuts are a little hard to get to and will take you longer than you think.

2====the tranny case to engine bolts are best taken on by using a series of extensions on your ratchet. I broke one of mine during the exhaust disassembly and really needed the extra 1'. Took me 2x the time because of it.

Anyway, it is all out. If there are any pictures that anyone needs of the area with the tranny out, let me know.
