How Important is the Friction Modifier For The Limited Slip Diffs

I'm just going to chime in and say that from buying at the JY, most 99-01 higher end SOHCs around here have 4:10 gears, like Eddie Bauers and Limiteds, mine (01 Eddie Bauer) came with them, also been told the rear hitch is a giveaway just walking by a truck.

Man wish that was case around here..im regearing my aviator this weekend to 4.10 but it has irs

Where is the ABS hole on the rear differential?

I believe on our gen Explorer's there are just two sensors in the front ...like this Ranger ....see 2:37 point in video.....
I could be off and I'm sure some one will chime in to correct me (as usual :) )

^ There should be a 3rd sensor for the rear, mounted at the top of the differential.

Note how the video initially mentioned that it had 4 wheel ABS. In order to have ABS in the rear you have to have a rear sensor so that Ranger does too. It's just that it has only one sensor and one brake line going to the rear (same line goes from left wheel to right wheel across the axle) so it is not independent (left vs right, it's activating both) rear wheel ABS. It takes the same sensor as my '98, and sidneyhop's '00 Explorer:

So if I add 7oz of limited slip additive through the ABS hole on the top of the diff will this extra amount cause there to be too much, and frothing of the gear oil?

^ No that's fine, not much difference vs the almost 3 qts it takes but do you really need 7oz? I thought the spec was 4oz. but could depend on what the product states... or you could just use a piece of tube in the fill hole to drain out the few oz worth you're putting in, use a turkey baster to start fluid flow if you don't have a transfer pump.

Removing the speed sensor, there's always a chance it could break coming out. Up to you, it's not an expensive part at Rock Auto, though at a local auto parts store it probably costs >2X as much.

The products at a local store are often the large 7oz size etc, which is too much for a single LS. I think 4oz is enough also, but always use the fill hole to set the level properly, too much is bad, and will come out the side seals and make a mess of the brakes.

I have never taken the rear ABS sensor out before, I don't know if it's fragile like the front ones are.

I ended up suctioning out some oil and putting in the 7oz thru the standard fill hole as I didnt want to risk breaking the ABS sensor on the top.

ABS sensor comes right out, its sealed with a couple of O rings, it does not break like the front sensors do
Overfilling by 4-7oz wont hurt anything as long as your vent tube is clear

Say, have you used many different 8.8 covers than stock? I have a cheap $100 one that in some reviews said they take more gear oil. I don't see where there's more space inside, but I'd love to have more fluid in it.

I have had a few different covers over the years, for me I guess it would be beneficial to run a cover with more capacity so I could put some fluid back....but even though I am a quart shy of the stock fill level I have not had a single hiccup from my 97 explorer 31 spline 8.8 with 4.10 yukon gears and a ARB locker in the last what 15 years of wheeling it rather hard and daily driving with 33-35" tires.....

There are some nice aluminumcovers these days that have drain plugs, and cooling fins plus main cap bearing girdle built in.....Im not sure if they allow additional fluid capacity.
Right now I have a stock metal cover with a Posion Spyder rock ring to protect it from peeling open on the rocks.
I also have a very nice rock crusher cover I won at a EF event raffle in Truckhaven many many moons ago...I have never even installed on anything! BUT I will!

I remember Cale Banks doing a series of tests of different aftermarket rear covers. The results were illuminating to say the least. You can see them on YouTube.
