How likely is orginal miles?

I just got back into a X. It's a 93 sport. The OD says 62K. It's only 5 digit.
However a carfax & auto check shows the latest mile check at 52K in 08. Before that the mile checks are, 46K in 06, 23K in 99, & 7 miles in 93. All in FL.

I'm treating it as 162K miles.

Just wondering if you guys think it's possible original miles. It was a 1 owner, & the condition of the interior & exterior is way above average.

162K for a '93 sounds realistic to me. I have a '91 X with 215K on it, and that's with having driven it all through FL, SC, and HI.

Very low miles are often much worse than high miles... Very low miles indicate infrequent very short trips where the engine does not reach operating temperatures and a lot of dry starts. High mileage generally indicates lots of highway driving, which, while all those miles put strain on the chassis and suspension, long periods of driving at even RPMs without large temperature fluctuations or sudden changes in the forces acting on your drive train will extend the life of your engine and drive train components.

62k miles is fully possible, but that would mean on average it was driven less than 4000 miles a year. The average in the US is 12,000 miles per year.

I agree that the mileage on the truck could be right. my former boss lived less than an 1/2 mile from our work and only put about 2K a year on his car.

when he went to get rid of it, it was worth more than when he bought it ( for a used dodge nitro )

so if it was owned by some one who was retired. this mileage should be just about right

If its a one owner truck, see if you could contact them and ask. I say its very possible, especially if its in very good cosmetic shape.

When I bought a 15 year old F250, odometer read 80,000. I had doubts, so I did a carfax, and it backed it up with previous year odo readings, and showed that it was first owned by city park and rec, then a church!

My '94 has 82k for sure, I have a good paper trail. The rust would make you think otherwise, I wish it had been 85K with frequent trips to the car wash.

The more I work on this X the more I think it is actual miles. The Motorcraft parts I'm taking off I can't believe have been on there for 167K & it runs as decent as it does. I just did the brakes & it had motorcraft rotors & drums with dealer part #'s

Don't be so quick to count out the 167k based on how good the parts look. Mine has 217k on it, is a '91, and has never been driven in snow or on salty roads. I was listening to how everyone was telling me how their suspension parts and undercarriage parts were rusted beyond recognition. Mine, however, as of last year, still looked brand new.

It's not the condition of the parts like they look new. They look well used. Just normal maintenance items that should have been replaced along those 167K miles seems to be original motorcraft & no way the X could run so well if these never have been replaced.
67k or 167k doesn't matter to me. The thing looks & runs great so...

That's a big jump in the records from 93 to 99. It's possible it went over the 100K mark before that, then the records after 99 were just taken with the actual odometer reading since it lacks a sixth digit.

There are telltale signs though. Original Motorcraft brake pads, drive belt, thermostat, etc. all point to a vehicle with under 80-120K. If the clutch & slave are original, it's probably 62K, or it was just driven very smoothly and the rest of the Motorcraft stuff could be accounted for by being serviced only at a dealership.

Either way a full change of all fluids is probably the best thing, along with a going-over from top to bottom. I don't think you need to replace everything on it though, some of that original Motorcraft stuff will last 200K and beyond.

Good thought to know..... mine has 197k (verified by the one owner autocheck odometer records, and NC emissions inspections)

I was almost irritated when I pulled what looked like original plug wires at 195k.... I figured if the wires were original, they must be good wires. So I went to advance and got me some motorcraft plugs & wires. Truck runs great.

before my mom passed away (who i got my x from...), there was some debate as to what the "real" miles were. we got the vehicle from a good friend and have no question that it had 200K miles on it when we got it. now the odometer reads "92,000" or something to that effect. according to my mom, this would have meant it has 392,000 miles, meaning we put 200,000 miles on it. i think it's a bit unrealistic to believe she put that many miles on it that quickly (within a matter of a few years). i stick to saying it has 292,000 -- i know for sure it can't be less than that.

is there any reliable way to know for sure or will i never know? lol

edit: hmm, now that i think about it, it does sound less far fetched than it used to. when i got it in 07-08, it read "40,000" and i've put the 50K after that on it. we got it around 03 from our friend when we knew for sure it had 200K on it (196, iirc). she did have a job as a delivery courier for a portion of that time which required her to use her own vehicle. still would be nice if there were a way to know for sure =\

You could spend the $30 on a carfax or autocheck report to track the mileage. I am guessing it has been in FL all it's life, therefore with every title transfer the mileage is annotated. The bad part is if there wasn't any annual inspection records to go between titles issued there may be only 3-4 mileage readings.

Don't be alarmed if you run a report and you get "not actual miles" or "exceeds mechanical limits" -- for some strange reason the DMV's don't use common sense to see if there is one reading for 99xxx then another for 00001 it doesn't exceed the limits just put a 6th digit there.... make it right.... enough ranting... I just frequent ebay alot and read the history reports on stuff I'm interested in.

Actually, it went from NC to TN to FL (it actually still has the NC emissions sticker in the windshield, have neglected to remove it). I seriously doubt there has been any useful records on it unfortunately . Good idea though, may give it a shot one day.

With the old NC inspection sticker the miles might be annotated on a history report. That is how I tracked my miles... there were two inspection records one for 52k then another for 114k, being it was a 1 owner the guy must've used the same shop and knew the vehicle well.

a lot of states are that way. Oklahoma is I know for sure (since I'm from there) I think TN is that way.

KY on the other hand updates the mileage on the title upon transfer of ownership. Blasted right on the title.... weird...:scratch:

If it was ever titled/tagged in KY there would've been a mileage annotation. I have transferred 2 KY titles with miles stated on the titles, which in turn would be annotated on a history report.

Like you my truck is from NC. Wake Forest to be exact. Built and delivered/ sold in 12/91. I just turned 201k on mine last week.
