Just out of curiousity, I'm trying to determine the average failure rate for the 4r55e/5r55e. How many miles did yours go?

Bought it with 29k(off lease) have 154k and still running only did valve body rebuild (delay in reverse) runs just as good as new.

I had to install a Superior shift kit due to a 2-3 "flare" at 60K miles.
One bottle of LubeGard Red was added at that time.

The trans is still shifting fine at 82K miles.

Not directly responsive to your poll, but I now have 220,000 on my A4LD.

when I traded it off (97 explorer xlt 4.0 ohv) it had 236,000 miles with regular mant. bought it with 110,000 miles lot of long trips short commutes and ocasinal pullling of a trailer but I knew when to take it out of od when pulling trailer....new explorer 2000 eb 4.0 sohc had 79,000 miles a year later at 112,000 no problems yet

133000 miles 2nd gear "flare" and get a code of 2nd gear out of sync on occasion. still perfectly driveable, we just put 900 miles on it going on vacation.

David

BTW 2000 XLT with 5r55e

Experienced 2-3 flare at 81,000 miles. Fixed it with Ford upgrade and Superior shift kit.

I'm at 114k and still ok but shifts feel a tad softer. I'm planning to replace the EPC solenoid and add one of the shift kits soon. I would have started already, but my other vehicle is down with a cracked head so I want to get it running again before I tear the Explorer apart.

113k :thumbdwn: On trans 2 now and 30k on it. needs to go over to for to have the flid changed. Warranty runs out at x-mas

Good feedback! I'm not going to discuss my own rig since I only have fake wood within reach. :p I should be thinking about a cooler though.

Don't know how to answer your poll. I had to replace my torque converter at 97k or so, but the rest lasted another ~80k miles and my first total rebuilt was just done this year at somewhere around 175k miles.

151,000 Miles, stock, just line pressures adjusted in my custom tuning and every oil change I recheck the band adjustment, and synthetics added. NO probs yet! Don't forget I am boosted and one of the fastest on this board. My 5r55e has been an excellent trans. I don't "rawdog" it at every stop sign either though, I drive it normally but I am not afraid to spool the turbo when needed!

well we purchased our 95 with about 100,000 miles on it give or take, and it had a tranny rebuild at 85,000. It had the 2-3 flare ever since we got it, and we had to have the tranny rebuilt again when the intermediate band broke at 160,000 and the ended up replacing a lot of stuff that the other shop did not replace. The original rebuild was a really bad rebuild, but the rebuild we have now is working great with about 2,000 miles on it. Im very happy with it.

I have 205k and things are going well no matter if I am driving like I am 80 or attempting stupid feats. Years ago when my X had 40k or so on it I pulled 7k from michigan to ct on I-80 and then it became the resident pack mule for whenever my family decided to go anywhere with gear. Of late it has been my daily driver as well as hunting fishing vehicle. Every so often I feel the need to burn some rice, or attempt it in the case of a WRX about two weeks ago. I think that the tranny is rather bullet proof in the sense of modern auto trannys

I have 233k on my original tranny. I had it flushed at 160K. Its still going strong.

I have 120,000 miles on it and, it was ran empty on tranny fluid twice (has a small leak) and I work it pretty hard. Cross my fingers.

1998 Explorer Sport, 148,x.. miles and counting. I suppose I should get around to fixing that 2-3 flare I've been experiencing for a while now....

I have on the 2000 Ex, 131k on the odo,, And just started to feel weird in the 3=4th gear shift. So it's in the shop, but the check engine light is on, so hopefully it's something small w/ that. Still drives good solid shifts through the other gears,,,,,,,, crossing fingers!
