How long do you warm up your truck?

Get in, start it & go. I keep it under 3,000 RPM. Why? I dont know. Sounds right.
Do you warm up the TV set before watching it?

I let it run for maybe 3 minutes or until the idle drops to around 800 rpm's............it seems to run much better when i let it warm up.

I start the truck, and always at least wait for the idle to drop to 800 or so.

If the motor is cold I wait until the valve clatter is down to a low roar (takes about 1 minute)..


and YES I warm up the TV before Watching Movies (I usually watch trailers make some popcorn before I watch the movie).. The picture is clearer. If I don't I see too many converance issues (e.g. red/blue bleed on white objects).

i let mine warm up around 5 minutes, after that its hot air only minutes after. and BTW it is ok to idle, just wastes gas thats all. whats harder on an engine 800 rpms or 1500

oh and i do just as much real heavy accelerating as i normaly would..it warm's up faster that way..soon as it's started im in gear(almost)

In the winter I usually let it run for 10 - 15 mins and then take it easy on the gas for a couple of miles. In the summer I let it run for 4-5 mins. PS remote start rawks.

in the winter i run outside in my boxers start the car up go inside and get dressed and leave for school usually about 10min but when it has been really cold around here -10 it has run as long ans 20min

In the morning I give it 2-3 minutes, i'd like to give it more but am usually running late in the morning, at work I go out 10 minutes early to start it.

Basically, more or less, this is why I started the thread. I have a remote start that is programmable to have the truck idle for 5 minutes, 10, 15, or 20 minutes. I found that 5 minutes is about right in freezing temperature. Once I get in the truck the needle is just about to creep up and the heater is already blowing warm air.

Oh by the way, Billy177, you are in desperate need of this.

in cold weather, ill go out and start it before im about to leave ( 2-3 minutes) then ill let the rpms drop below 1000, but i still let the tranny warm up(idle down the driveway, and down the street about a block, to get the fluids mixed up a little) but i hardly ever go over 2k rpms as it is, gotta take care of this thing, its gettin old
Summer time, let the rpms drop below 1000 also.

ya that is the thing i don't like about the sohc it awalys seems to want to rev to about 3k before wanting to go at a normal speed

It depends on how much drivihg I am doing. The real damage occurs when shutting down an engine that has not fully warmed up. You will get alot of white sludge from condensation. You may be able to see it on your filler cap when you take it off. Also if not fully warmed you will rust out tail pipes and mufflers alot quicker. Just ask my wife how many tailpipes and mufflers she has been through compared to me.

In Michigan during the winter, I usually let it run for a 10-15 minutes before I drive to school. (whether parked in the unheated pole barn or outside) In the summer, I give it maybe 2 minutes if it hasn't been run for 24 hours or so. Gives time to role down the windows, blow out the hot air, and tune to the XM. If in a parking lot or some other short term stop, maybe 10-15 seconds; enough to get the valve tick out.

In the Winter here in MI I wait anywhere from 5mins to 20mins depending what's on TV, and how cold it is out (I also park in the garage). In the summer I start and go, I have not owned the Explorer long enough to know what it is like in the summer but if like my past cars I will get in and go. I do however go slow (below 10mph) down the dirt road till I get onto the main road...usually 3-4 mins.

I never warm it up, regardless what the climate is. The engine will warm up a lot faster when you drive. I'm not kidding. When I let the engine running for 15 minutes, the temp gauage, at least mine, would not move much. But when I start my truck and go and keep it under 3500 rpm, then the engine warms up to normal operating temperature after 3 or 4 minutes. So IMHO, it's a waste for you to start your truck 15 minutes in advance.

i let my vehicle run about 10 to 15 minutes in cold weather,


in the summer i just start and go, but i usually let the temp gauge hit normal before i do any crazy acceleration

In normal temperatures...I basically get in, start it, put on my belt, turn on my lights....and by then, the rpms are down to 800 or whatever...Put it in gear and go.

When it is cole enough to have the clatter sound...I let that go away first....

When its REALLY cold...Snow on ground cold..I plug in the block heater

The thing is..Since My X is an Ex-Police vehicle..it has lots of idle hours on it.....when was the last time you saw an on duty cop car shut off with a cop in it???

To make matters worse..it was a dog vehicle for a while..gotta run it in the summer time also to keep the A/C on for the dog...

My other 2 vehicles have remote start and I have the remote set on 30 minutes so that it will be either heated or cooled by then. When the weather is not hot or cold I will go out and start and sit for a few minutes and put the auto in gear and let the trannie get some fluid running thru it, then go!
My EX has no remote starter so I just go out and let it run for a few minutes with the auto in gear then go! When the roads are snowy or icy I never leave until the RPS have dropped. I always leave myself plenty of time to get to where I am going!
Tweeter will be putting a remote start in my EX this spring! The Tweeter around here is first class. They even have customized some vechiles interiors for guys that want a real good sound system.
