How many miles on your 3RD GEN! orig. tranny????

My 02 4.0 XLT went out at 162K, rebuilt now and shifts like new.

I had 110,000 on my mountaineer and it shifted perfectly. The 2002 explorer we have is at 186,000 on the original tranny and it still shifts perfect.

I'm at 349K on my 02 4.0 XLT. I've had all of the typical issues with electrical components, like switches, broken wires, regulators, etc., but I managed to get about 250K before I had to get the transmission rebuilt.

I'm having the same issues again, flashing O/D light, missing 3rd, 5th and reverse. I'm on the fence about doing anything about it since this ride has been so good to me. It would cost me more to buy another vehicle, so I may just fix it again.

Well I'm at just under 180,000 on my original transmission.

I have a two, maybe three, day drive across the country ahead of me in August and this thing slips every now and then going into second just a little.

It's been just under 100,000 miles since the last time the fluid was flushed and filled. I'm considering having it flushed again and putting Mobil One in it.

Thoughts?

I bought mine with 114,7xx on it and had to rebuild it due to flashing O/D light and slippage going into first so no idea when it started but I'm hopeful that I'll get more than that out of the rebuild.

Just over 180,000 now. Just had it flushed and filled with Mobil One and it feels great!

I'm at 136,000 (2002 XLT v8) and still have the original transmission. The converter has been making a rattling noise for many years but I'm not sure what to do about it. I guess it would cost me about $500-$600 to get it replaced. The transmission seems to be working fine otherwise, so I am reluctant to touch it.

I suppose at some point I should think about getting the transmission fluid changed out, but again, I am reluctant to do anything since everything is working well.

Well I am new to this forum but not new to Ford products. I have a 02 Taurus and a 99 Escort.
I just bought a 2005 Explorer with 114,000 miles on it. Flashing o/d light flashing, no reverse ect. So I am going to pull it and go from there. I don't have 1600 dollars for a rebuild. I am going to look around for a used one but might be as bad as this one.

Our '02 Explorer trans finally bit the dust at 218k. The trans was original, never been overhauled or replaced. Decided to go ahead an sell it to a friend that has a used car business. The Explorer was still drivable, even though the O/D off light was flashing and came up with a 'CHECK TRANSMISSION' message on the display. We owned this vehicle since new, have to say it was a pretty decent one. Was able to get $1500 for it with a bad trans, but this one was loaded out, only option it didn't have was a V8.

Guess I'll be checking out of the forum, best of luck to everyone else and happy miles!

'02 4X4 XLT trans slips

Though I would chime in. My trans lasted 78,000 miles with no maintenance. No reverse but will go down the road in second only. Guess I should have maintained it...or would it have failed anyway. I have read there is a design flaw where steel shafts rub in aluminum bores causing them to get obround. If I get a rebuilt from Ford..chances are it will be from a core with more miles than mine so I might have mine rebuilt. It has been a good friend but all these failures are unacceptable.

Bought my 02 in 2010 with 147k no previous records, at 225k now with only have issues at cold start, needs to warm up for a min or so before it will catch gear, other than that it runs great.
