How many miles on your 3RD GEN! orig. tranny????

02 XLT .. made to 81000 miles / then a new transmission was needed .... my 99 needed a new one at 184,000 // my 97 F150 RWD has 460,000 & never any problems / My old Cadillac has over 700,000 & everything is original & working well. Neighbours 70's model GMC 4x4 has 960,000 & all original. Ford seems to have some tranny issues with the 4x4 vehicles. If you get a used one with the original transmission, plan on a rebuild ord a change. My Brother's 96 xlt made it to 198,000 & had to rebuild. Transmission Short Life Problem has been around for a while.

2002 XLT 4wd, 195,000 miles. Original transmission, cv joints, ball joints. On its third set of brakes.

76000 on our 05 2wd eddie bauer...no problems. I've had it flushed at the dealer to get all new fluid in there every 30,000 miles. Never had the pan off, guess I should replace the filter soon.

2002 xlt

O/D light of death at 109K. Taking it to transmission guy today. Code I'm getting is shifter solenoid problem, but my guy says that's usually never the real problem. I'll let you know...

reset your car battery, it resets the ECU and removes the info that your ECU has learned about your driving style

does this actually do anything for the tranny?

does this actually do anything for the tranny?

According to the manual it does:

im def going to try it when i get a chance...thanks

I always perform the procedure after having the battery disconnected so I have nothing to compare it to. Good luck, let us know how you make out! ;)

Got my 05 used with 20k on the clock. At about 69k the trans grenaded itself. 4 grand to replace.

160k and still running

I have a 2003 XLT 4.0, 160k plus and runs like a champ, never had a problem with it, and most people can not believe it! Ha! For the record, I never had it serviced, also I've never done any towing either nor heavy hauling, I'm the only driver (I think that's the reason). Honestly, I start to think is gonna run forever

At approx. 90 ish K miles, had to have my 02 Expl. tranny replaced/rebuilt and again at 118 K.

I got so euchred!!! So I don't insult all the respectable trany people, I'll end my post here.

It would be interesting to know how many had trouble with their tranny and used their Explorer to tow with.

Mine had two trannys put in by the previous owner and I found a tow hitch/ball in the back so I assume it would used for towing. Trans was replaced at 85,000 and again with 120,000. Both times by AAMCO. Now has 142,000 and no sign of trouble (knock on wood).

I don't plan on towing anything so we'll see how long this trans lasts.

I will be the first to admit that I used my explorer extensively for trailering stuff. Nothing excessive weight wise, well within the recommended GVW.

One thing I did/do find absoluetly rediculous is how one has to check the trans fluid level. I would love to have a little chat with person at Ford behind that little brain fart.

Ha. My explorer Is the 4.6L V8 and its an 03 and I wouldnt be surprised if it has never seen a tranny fluid flush and it has 117k miles and is still going. Shifts smoothly and everything. I know the person before me beat on it hardcore too.

92,500 knock on alot of wood hoping the ex runs too 150,000 without problems
