How similar are the 5R55E and 5R55W transmissions?

Will a 5R55E computer run a 5RR5W trans? The W has a much more desirable 1st gear, and would be great for off roading. I'm guessing I would need a ECM to match the W.

i think one of them is missing a sensor the other one has. this is off the top of my head, i could be wrong.

There are several differences as far as sensors & solenoids, so they are not easily interchangeable. One thing I've learned from the members on this site is that nothing is impossible.

Wasn't James Henson running a 5R55w in his turbo Explorer, with a stand alone computer? Or was he running a 5R55s?
