I figured since I already dropped the VB to change the gaskets, no noticeable tears/blow out on upper gasket, I would go ahead and order a new EP solenoid for the Explorer (96 EB 4X4 5R55E).
Should the EP be able to twist a little while still in the valve body? To remove it do I just unbolt the metal bracket?
Any special tricks to installing it?

Doh!..I'm an idiot... I'm so used to reading about 5R55E trans problems I didn't look carefully at what trans I had. I actually have a 4R55e trans in my 96 Explorer 4.0 4x4 Auto trans. not the 5R55e.
Thankfully, it looks like the 4R55E and 5R55E valve body plate gaskets are the same, as is the EP solenoid.
Still waiting for the EP to arrive to reassemble.

The gaskets, and the EPC solenoids are not the same. The gasket & separator plate have a hole in a different location. The 4R55E uses a green band EPC. The 5R55E uses a red band EPC.

Now I'm confused..
BWD Replacement offered in this listing will contain a Tan/White Screen

It's possible that these gaskets might have holes for both transmission separator plates but I'm not sure. As for the red band EPC, it could work but the calibration is set for the 5R55E transmission. Borg Warner makes an upgraded EPC solenoid without a band which will work on both transmissions. WWW.BulkPart.Com sells it.

Looks like as long as I have the correct VB plate, which I do, I should be OK.
Only difference is location of the hole in the front area of the VB.

The EPC Solenoid WILL be a Borg Warner replacement that has a Tan/White screen so I should be OK here. The pictured part is only a reference stock photo.

already have both VB gaskets. waiting on EPC which should arrive today, Fri.
If this doesn't cure my problems it's off to the tranny shop.
Luckily, I work in commercial sales selling auto parts to shops and have a few good hook ups that will give me a deal on a rebuild , if necessary.
