The handles I bought were these from 1AAuto: 1999 Ford Explorer Rear Driver & Passenger Side Metal Reinforced Upgrade 2 Piece Exterior Door Handle Set TRQ DHA36585

Probably a little more expensive, but seem solid.

They state metal reinforced upgrade, which part is metal and is that metal a portion that was plastic on the originals?

I installed all 4
the backing the part where the screws would go into the door on the handle is reinforced fiberglass plastic the handle the part you grab with your hand to open the door is cast aluminum very nice handles
