I have a 2001 XLT V-6 with approx 135,000 miles.

My rear liftgate glass opens, but its not a really smooth operation. The button to open the rear liftgate glass is kinda sticky/does not push in easily.

Any suggestions how to improve this ? Do I need to lube the button itself ? Lube in the latch area where the glass latches into ? Other ?

Thanks.

Spray some white lithium grease into the window latch, and then spray a little bit into the window hinges as well. As long as you're doing that, might as well lube up the liftgate, door, and hood hinges and latches as well. You only need a little bit. Also helps keep corrosion from formin in the hinges.

I use Liquid Wrench to lube the hinges. Just my personal opinion, but I think spray grease is too thick to get into the hinge pin. You want something to lube the pin, not stay on the surface.

i'm not sure if this is what you're referring to but, my xlt hatch window button would sometimes stick when pushed in. i sprayed it good with some WD40 about a year ago and it's still working smoothly.

if you're referring to how it opens, you might need new lift struts.

Yes, I'm focused on the button. So I assume you spray into the key hole.

And around the button itself ?

i'd only spray inside the key hole if you're having a key related problem. i'm talking about around the button. i used a dental pick looking tool to pull the rubber away from the button a little to get in there good.

I've always preferred to use a dry graphite lube on key locks which has worked very well over the years. I've been doing this for 10 plus years. I have a 2000 Nissan Maxima which I've always done this and no problems.

edit: i was working on my rear wiper motor today and i realized the rubber boot is around the wiper shaft not the push button. just spray your lubricant of choice between the button and the plastic. spraying it into the lock will not help the push button's operation.

take off the inside trim panel and check to be sure the plastic carrier around the button is in good condition. Lube won't actually help much, since it is metal against plastic, and I've seen more than a few of them with that carrier broken, which mis-aligns the button, thereby making it really hard to operate.

Buy and install new lift struts
