I am going to paint it with a bunch of rattle cans so buetty is not the top priority more just get it all the same color.

you should be able to just peel it from one side and have it come off. however, on an 86 that probably is just a theory and the pinstripe will only peel off in cm long sections. you can either do it in little itty bitty sections, or if you are giong to be painting just sand it off. or you might want to try a razor blade.

That stripe is a factory stripe which they use to change the two tone color.
You can heat it up sometimes and then peel it off, or use a plastic razor blade.
They don't come off real easy, but it will come off.

I just took a hair dryer to heat the end of the stripe, which made it softer and less brittle, then once I lifted it off, I just kept pulling. Any of the sticky crap left behind(there shouldn't be much if you keep it at the right angle when pulling) will just rub off with your fingers.

Go to any automotive paint store and ask for a stripe removal wheel. 3m makes one and astro makes another. You will need a 3/8ths drill . This is the easy way! :D

Automotive shop way

A friend of mine is the lead painter for a body shop. They have this cool little rubber thing that goes on the end of drill that you can drag along the pinstriping and it takes it off. I believe he refered to it as an "eraser" If there is a body shop around you, go and talk with them ... see if they can have one of the guys at the shop come out and do it for you for cheap.

Are they paint or tape stripes, if they are the tape kind, you can buy decal removal spray. Used it on my Dodge Shelby Charger to remove tape stripes, when I needed to get it off to do some body work after I hit the tire wall at Loudon N.H. in "83".
