Two years ago I traded a crappy Camaro (Don't get me wrong I love Camaros but the one I had was crappy) and got my Current 1994 Ford Explorer.

The Dude I got it from swore the 4 wheel drive didn't work, but with the little testing Ive been able to do points to it working.

There's not alot of places you can safely have "fun" without worrying about cops so aside from some icey days I haven't had to many chances to test the 4x4 to much.

Not only that it takes a lot to prove a challenge for me in two wheel drive so Ive never really "needed" it.

Is there a safe test I can do that won't ruin jacks or anything?

if it's in 4 wheel drive, and you go around a sharpish turn, you should feel it "shimmying" or sliding one wheel a tad. this isn't very good for the drivetrain but it will indicate weither it's working or not.

what i usually do though, is just jack up the rear end, put it on jack stands, then see if (in 4x4) it'll drive off the jack stands.. do it slowly, it wont hurt anything. in fact, here's a video demo on that.

It should be obvious if you have your rig in 4x4. If you really need to visually see the front tires spin... put the truck on jacks. Take it to a shop and ask them to show you.

wet grass, 2wd will suck ass 4x4 will not. or gravel, or dirt. anything.

here's one 4 yah

the best way i found is to tie the truck off, to a tree or sumpin. put it in 4 high, and give'er the beans. then look out the window, if the front tires are spinnin it works.(if the 4x4 is weak you'll find out too) thats how i tested my 95 x. AND SHE TOOK IT(ripped the pole right out the ground):burnout:
