How wide can I go?

Hey, I have a '98 XLT with the stock rims, on which I currently have 235/75r15 BF Goodrich Mud Terrains. I know that I can easily fit 255/70r15's on the rims, but how much larger can I go? I'm really looking for as wide as possible here, not nessecarily tall. Anyway, is 255 as wide as I can safely go here?

Any wider than the 255/70 and the sidewalls will bulge. This not only looks goofy (IMHO) it has the tendency to makethe vehicle feel unstable at speed. I like the look of the 255/70 and think you will be happy with them.

What about max width/size with a 60 series?

60 series has nothing to do with how wide you tire will be....

60 is the aspect ratio of the tire width to sidewall height...... a 235/70/15 is still as wide as a 235/60/15.... it is just a shorter tire
