Is it possible for a howl on decel 60-30mph in the transfer case to also cause a no reverse problem when hot? seen on a cl ad and might reply, this one is a 97 4.0L auto.

Probably not. The howl will soon result in complete drivetrain disengagement...no park, drive nothing. 4LOW is all that will be left, if that.

Yes, a common problem with the 4405 is the case wearing out and allowing the shifter rail to move around, that can cause both a "no reverse" and "howling on deceleration" condition.
