I have a 98 4X4 and there is a humming sound start a couple months ago from the front end. At first I thought is was the tires....so i rotated and balanced (tires are only 6 moths old) and it kinda sounds worse....the sound is independent of engine RPM....kicks in about 5 MPH and kinda disappears around 50...may be due to road noise covering it up....truck drives fine though....no vibration...no shifting problems...and front wheel bearings seem fine when I shook them (jacked up)....any clue...anyone....?

I wish I had a hummer in the front end :D

Make sure you grabbed the top and bottom of the wheel and then move it back and forth. Bearings can still be tight, but they can easily burn up. The explorer front bearings are sealed too I believe. So if it is that, get ready for a good part price of probably around $400. Is it more of a churping noise or a grawling type noise? Hopefully it is nothing in your front differential or your t-case. Maybe try removing your front driveshaft and see if it goes away - if it doesn't then its defilently upfront and not in your transfer case. Good luck.

Check the fluid level in your transfer case......

it is kinda like a grawling noise....as far as transfer case fluid level...i never see anything under my truck except the A/C water runoff.......if the transfer case fluid level was low where would it go?

Thanks....
