Recently I got a humming drone from the front of my 99 Explorer XLT 4.0 SOHC. It only does it when I let off the the gas going down the road. The second I'm back on the accelerator, the sound is gone. The sound will "wind down" as the vehicle slows to a stop. It stops when the vehicle does.

I read the threads about the IAC. Since it doesn't do it when the vehicle is stopped, only when moving, I wasn't sure if it's the IAC.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Doug

i get this too, it has something to do with the air filter/silencer.

it only happens at idle when the car is hot.. i have a 4.0 ohv.

It is definatley the IAC. I suggest removing it and cleaning it. If that doesn't help, you may need to purchase a new one. They run around $50-$80 brand new at Advance Auto or Autozone or any of the major automotive parts store.

I had the same problem. When at idle I got the humming noise more. I took mine off and cleaned it with a clean rag and I have never had a problem again. They suggest that you do not spray any cleaning agent in it also.

Not Iac

I took the Explorer to the shop. It was NOT the IAC. The front differential was shot. Cost to repair? Over $1500. Luckily I'd bought the extended warranty and it's all covered. Just in time too. The warranty goes out at 100,000 miles. Miles on my Explorer....99280.
