I just installed my hurst shifter last night. It seems high quality and made well. For those of you with the Hurst short shifter for 5 speeds I have a couple questions. It transfers more noise than the stock shifter which sounds like that's normal. Has anyone come up with a way to over come that, more insulation or anything? And secondly which really bothers me, is that it vibrates in third and fourth gears. There is just a little side to side play in those gears which lets it vibrate and drives me bonkers. Has anyone else experienced that, or fixed it?

I dont have any answers for you, but it sounds WAY cool, I cant wait to see it.

Are you going to the Meet & Greet in Breezewood ?

You should be able to adjust these screws some more to get as tight of a fit as you can into the gears. Also I switched the shift knob to something that doesn't screw directly on.....so that I could use the plastic bushing supplied with the knob to fit it to the stick. The plastic acts as a barrier between the metal. After that I tried to get a thicker shifter boot. It all helped a bit....but there is still some noise.

What M&G in Breezewood? I take it you are going?

Its a MD/PA one up near the I-76 & I-70 intersection up in PA. About 2 hours from Ellicott City, MD so probably around 1.5 hours for you if not a little more. September 17th for lunch.

I did readjust those stop screws. But the more you tighten them the more they push the stick out of gear so I couldn't make them that tight. My X didn't require the 1/4" spacer. But for the hay of it I reinstalled it with the 1/4" spacer to see if it would even work and make a difference. It not only still works but actually shifts and feels better with it installed. It also maybe slighty helped with the vibrating. I took the extra rubber circle that I had to cut from the stock inner boot so it would fit the Hurst, modified it and stuck it in the space around the shift lever down in the shifter circle thing. I did that to cusion the sifter lever and try to put a little tension to hold it in place and not vibrate. It helps a lot. Now I just need to sound proof the floor and what not around and on top of the shifter area to help keep engine and road noise out.

You going? I think I'll try to make it. I might have stuff coming up though. Although one of the things that might be going on is in West Virginia so maybe I'll try to do both.

Hey Kevin you'll be sad to hear that for the moment I had to take out my custom HU install to install the Hurst shifter. :(

You are gonna put it back in right ??

Yeah I will be out there at Breezewood.

Well I took it out because the Hurst shifter is in the way of it. The Hurst shift lever is a different angle than the stock and doesn't leave room for the second HU. I am plannning to re-install it when I make my custom full length console. Hopefully it will only be about a month before I start it. Things have been so crazy this summer I haven't been able to start it.

I noticed a slight more amount of noise. Part of it though is b/c my transmission has a slight whine. Also, I have loud mud tires, KKM, cat-back, and a stereo that is always turned up a good bit, so it's really hard to tell it. I plan on taking out the shifter and selling in the next year or so....b/c I will be getting a new one for a ZF5 5speed. (cough cough...to bolt up to the back of a 302) :D If you could insulate it more, it would prolly be perfect then.

Is the spring tension adjustable on these? I saw an advertisement for Hurst shifters in a magazine. It said that the spring tension was adjustable and our model was one of the ones listed.

Why couldn't you stuff the shift boot full of (fireproof) insulation? Or would that be dumb
?
