In september 2010 i purchased a new clutch master from pheonix friction. Installed the unit, took it to a clutch specialist and had it bled properly.

No prob the ting worked great. I was due for a clutch and slave but put it off for a months.

During December on my way home from a holiday, the clutch started slipping on the freeway while using cruise control. I turned cruise off and it settled down. Then the clutch started slipping again when i needed to power on for hill etc.

I managed to ge the car home. The next day it was fine but i took it to the clutch pro for a new clutch and slave a few days later.

About 2 weeks after the new parts i again was driving on a freeway with cruise control on and it started to slip again. It slipped whenever i powered on. Not wanting to damage a new clutch i slowed down and drove so carefully that slip was limited.

A few hours later it was fine again. I put it down the new clutch which was only about 300 kilometres old. I was told to driver carefully for 500 kilometres.

Then again about 1 month later it slipped again and did not stop. Only this time my daughter was driving and instead of ringing me decided to drive it any way. She had just come off a freeway but she was not useing cruise control.

I drove straight to the Clutch pro and he took a look at it. He said the clutch was working fine. Even took it for a drive and it was fine.

I described to him that when the slip occured my pedal went hard and the freeplay at the top of the pedal was not there.

He said it sounded to him like the master was pressurisng, causing the clutch to activate as if i was depressing the pedal. He said the slipping occurs because its like im driving with my foot partially on the clutch. He also said this sort of thing is rare. On the day i took it to him the weather changed and became very cool. He could not fault it even though he gave it a good pounding during our test drive. ( i would never drive my car the way he did during the test). It slipped all the way to his workshop but would not slip even if he drove it like a race car.

OK, SO WHAT IS THE CAUSE. First let me mention that on each occasion this occured is was in HOT weather. It has never happened on a cool day and only started to occured on freeways when in 5th gear and throttle is put on for a hill climb etc. It has never occured prior to the install of the master i purchased from pheonix friction. I replaced the old one because it had a leak.

Has anybody ever heard of this. Why would my master pressurize during hot weather at high speed.

The fluid expands when it gets hot. The vent valve in the master cylinder is probably not working properly. the first step in diagnosing would be to check the fluid level. if it is over full that may also cause your problem

Where is the vent valve.

By the way, the clutch pro insisted on using DOT3 even though spec advise dot4. I asked him if this would cause this issue he said no way. The only difference between the oils was DOT3 has more lubricating type properties. He insisted on the DOT3 after advice from one of his suppliers.

Another thing is the reservoir that came with my new master is smaller than the one i removed. Also the rubber boot inside it is not as soft as the one i took out.

the vent valve is in the bore of the master cylinder. it allows fluid to escape back into the reseviour when the cluch pedal is released

Sounds like a defective master. See if you can get a warranty replacement.

IF you are going to replace the master cylinder, make sure you bench bleed the new one before installing.
