the sizes...

can't they just stick to 1 measurement ?

this is what it is :

P / LT 265 / 70 / R16

P = Passenger
LT = Light truck
265 is width in MM (wich is metric)
70 = Height in % compared to width
R = Radius
16 - 16 " rim (standart)

can't they just make all the tires in just 1...either all metric or all standart like the 31*10.20*15 ?

actual the r means RADIAL...some tires have a B for bias ply.....

anyways the # that follows that is rim diameter

They could stick to one measuremnet system but that would make sense. There are two measurement systems probably for the same reason that the US uses 'standard' (inches, miles, feet, gallons, etc.) while the rest of the world uses metric. We have to be different...

well i mean the us has to make up their mind, darn they us both systems....

the use standart for weight,height etc, but they use an metric system for money ......kinda strange not ?

and here's another one for you! How come the average 33" tire measure 32.1"?

technically matt, you are right. that should be a 32.....

Hey, at least the BFG T/A ko 33's measure 32.7". The rest of 'em are just marketing round-up's. Just like a 2x4 is actually 1.75 x 3.75 (NO you idiot, 1.75 x 3.5!!!)................

The 2x4s here are 1.75" x 3.5"
THIS IS MY 100TH POST :)

a dozen is twelve...a bakers dozen is 13? go figure

DOH!!!!!!!!!!!!! Brain fart on the 2x4's!! Don't know how I did that one!! Musta cooked a few brain cells outside today mowing the grass. I design and build sheds, decks, playsets, etc on the side for myself and my friends. If I didn't know the dimensions of a 2x4 cold, all my stuff would've fallen down by now. Wait a minute, I just heard the shed collapse....lol

better go and fix it jeff. a 2x4 is 1.75 x 3.5.. lol ;)

Already did :0)

Yeah...and how come computer monitors are always more than an inch smaller than what it really is?

If that's the way the world works...I'm going to start telling the girls that I have a 9 incher ;-)

You actually TELL them? I let em find out on their own...heh

you guys know that from your knuckle to the end of your pinky is 6 inches, right?

2x4s , 2xs in general

I dont know what you guys are talking about but 2x4s are actual 1.5" x 3.5". all dimensional 2x material is 1.5" thick FWIW.
It a nominal /actual thing.

maybe the knuckle from my left hand to the pinkie on my right...

SteveVB your wrong I just went out and measured a 2x4 its 1.75"x3.5"
I know the dimentions of my wood :)

heh

you sure you are all talking about tire size? ROFL... why is it that everytime someone mentions the size of something ...someone has to come up with the size of........lol nevermind....

Just to make you Americans feel better

Our European, more "logical" and more accurate tire sizes:
265/70-16 means 265 mm wide, 70 % of these 265 mm high with a 16inch diameter hole in the middle!!!!!

More accurate yes, but in my opinion is logical something else.

But, except with tires, metric really is a lot easier! And the US of A will become metric, inch by inch!
