What fresh hell am I in for? Did brakes on my 93 today and took the hubs off because the spring mechanism was pushing them about a 1/4 inch off the spindle and they were sorta in the way anyhow. When I put them back on I put them on so that they were laying flush on the rotor and not being forced out by the spring mechanism. I guess my question is...how bad did I screw this up and how can I fix it. Thanks!

You probably didn't screw anything up; you can check hub operation by lifting the wheels off the ground and rotating the axle shafts by hand.

Thanks arco, I'll give that a shot tomorrow. I just bought the truck a month ago with 56,000 original miles! I already know the shift motor is shot but I didn't consider doing this by hand just for trouble shooting purposes. Those hubs are full of nasty funky grease too!

The shift motor is real easy to rebuild and doesn't take long. There's a thread with instructions on here if you search.

Congratulations on finding a low mileage Explorer! Oh and welcome to the forums!

You don't have to mark the hubs when you take them off. They just go back on. If they don't fit flat, I just rotate them around a bit again.. Nothing special.

Now if you took it apart, that is another story.. I've never done that.

I have a shift motor I'll sell you. A whole working electronic transfer case if you want it.

You want to get as much of that grease out as you can, it can cause the hubs to not engage.

no need to mark them. Just alternate them from 1 lug to the next until they slide on.
