Yeah, this has been discussed many times. You may want to read here, about midway down. Dead Link Removed It's GJarret's regisrty page, and there is PLENTY of GOOD information there, including a portion about airbox drilling. I enjoyed reading it.
A couple of years ago I put in a K&N air filter and drilled 8 1-1/2" holes in the air box, the only difference it made was a loud howling sound when you "punch it". ( The same as turning over the air cleaner lid on mom and dads station-wagon when I was in high school.)
It didn't really hurt anything but I wish I hadn't done it.
