Hey, I have a 96 XLT with a 4.0 and i was just wondering if there was a way to make it so that when I switch into 4wd auto, it can actuall be in 4wd High? I notice that the 4wd doesnt kick in fast enough to keep me straight when I am in the snow, if I put a truck into 4wd in the snow or on the beach in the sand I want it to actually be in 4wd, it seems to me that the truck decides when it actually goes into 4wd high, it is fine in 4wheel low but you can't really drive around with it in low. Maybee I am wrong about the way 4wheel high works? Jack

Umm, thats what I am talking about, my 96 doesnt kick into 4wd by itself like the 97 and up do. I have 2wd, 4wd (auto), and 4wd low, 97 I think has 4wdauto, 4wdhigh, and 4wdlow. Thats why I am saying that I have a problem with the way it is set up, it doesnt really let me have a true 4wd high, just auto.----Jack

Ditto, you can most easily do what you want by manually powering the brown wire. With that wire powered, the clutch inside the transfer case will engage the front shaft.

Well that sounds great, the control trac is a great idea, but personally I think that once the wheels start spinning you are screwed, I thought the idea behind 4wd was to prevent you from getting into a situation where you would have excessive wheel spin? LOL Anyway I am gonna have to do this mod because I plan on using the truck on the beach this year so I can spend 2000 bucks on a tranny at the end of the summer. Ha ha just kidding.. Thanks for the help Jack

So if I understand this mod correctly I can in essence turn my explorer into 2whl drive ( still having the friction of the live front end) and back into auto 4whl drive with the flick of a switch ???

Correct. The 97-01s can have a true 2wd, and the 95-96 can have a true 4high. In both cases, one can also obtain 2low.

So disconnecting the "brown wire" would also help in eliminating the transfer case and or the front diff for a drive line problem (bucking under acceleration with a banging noise)?
