I got locked out of the car...while it was on with key in ignition

Interesting. I haven't ever locked mine on purpose and checked the keypad with the key in and running. I think I have noticed on all of mine while running the keypad won't unlock the doors. I might have missed one of my four, but I think they all work the same. That one time for me was a huge deal, I was late for work and shocked to see the doors locked....

I've locked mine inside a few times but not with it running. I center it on the driveway before I wash it and leave the fob in the cupholder, and a few times I've locked it on accident while washing it and hit the pad. Isn't the fob inside the cabin supposed to act as a deterrent so this doesn't happen?

The keypad did light up when I entered the code and SHOULD HAVE unlocked the car but it didn't. That's the problem after getting out of the car and closing the door, it locked up everything with the car running and my purse with the keys in it were in the passenger seat. No clue why this happens and this is the second time. It takes about 10 minutes before it unlocks itself. Pretty wierd huh? lol Intermittent problems are the hardest to solve.
The keypad should be operational when the engine is on. It is disabled on my 2nd gen's and my Mark VII's when the engine is running. I think that is a poor OEM design. I had it happen one time years ago, before going to work. I managed to accidentally push the LF door lock button down when I opened it to start the truck. It took me about 6-10 minutes to break into the hood, tripped the latch. Then it was another 15-20 to find a coat hanger and get really really lucky to "pop" the lock by the window, the RF I finally got into.

It was lit up when I touched it and put in the code but it did nothing. By rights it should have unlocked the car but it didn't. Nothing worked until 10 minutes later then It unlocked

If you happen to hit the right locking combination, the vehicle will lock with the keyfob inside. It is one of the ways to lock the key inside the vehicle.

Yes the key inside is not SUPPOSED to allow the car to lock but it did and as I said the keypad would not respond either
What is the combination you speak of

He could have pressed lock and closed the door. He has an XLT after all. The XLT comes with a keypad. Use that when you lock yourself out.
Mine didn’t come with a key pad
