I have a 91 explorer and my back up lights have stopped working. As well, my day time running lights seem to cut on and off from time to time, could these two problems be connected? I checked the fuse for the back up lights and it seems fine, any ideas?

There is a backup lamp switch, but darned if I know where it is. Your sure the bulbs & sockets are good?

I took out the tail-lights and inspected the bulbs and they were fine. I'll have to try and located the backup lamp switch. Thanks.

Yes the reverse sensor in the transmission and or wire to the sensor has issues.

What transmission does your 91 Explorer have?

This wire goes from taillights, up frame, near brake booster and through the transmission wiring harness. This harness goes through the upper intake and down the spine of the transmission (either 5 speed or auto) It is a single wire, black with pink I believe (would have to check)

If the switch in the trans is bad it will cause this. However to test the wiring first you can ground out the signal wire (at the sensor in the trans) and see if the lights come on.

Also I found some of these sensors are cheaper at the mazda dealer then the Ford dealer, some are a dealer item or used item only.
91 mazda Navajo or B4000 will have the same trans sensor.

Your truck should either have the A4LD automatic or the Mazda 5 speed.

I have an automatic transmission.

okay well the same info applies, you have the A4LD automatic.

do what i did. go to an auto parts store and get a set of "tractor" lights. mount them on the rear bumper and put a switch under the rear windshield whiper. i can see everything.

My setup is similar, except I had a single fog light in addition to my two stock lights and instead of a switch I let the stock reverse sensor turn them on.
