ok as some of you know i went back to a stock exhaust system. i grabed one off a 97' with 65k on it from the junk yard. now it worked/sounded great(quite) after it was installed. i have out about 160miles on it and now its got this horrid rattle above 2,500 RPMs. i was scared it was the motor itself so i unbolted the exhaust at the y-pipe and it did not have the sound. so i know its this muffler. i poked and proded all around under there playin with the heat sheilds and such trying to see it thats the problem. and i cant find anything loose. im wondering if some of the baffling could have brokin off inside the muffler? it sounds horrible and im not sure what the hell to do now

Sometimes thats the risk you take getting junkyard parts. Sometimes its not all about cost, I say get a cheap midas muffler or something. That is... if its not just a loose bolt or hanger making the noise.

i will check everything again.. im pretty sure its not but you can never be to sure. just pisses me off..lol but your right thats the risk with junk yard parts i geuss.

weirdest thing is that it was fine...i dont know im to tired an mad to worry about it now.

If, now I say IF your muffler is not welded in place..take the time to remove the clamps and get you muffler off and shake it around and see if somethings loose..or..jack up the X..put some stands under the axles..and pound on the muffler and see if something is loose....heck....if both rear tires are off the ground and the vehicle is secure.....start it up....and try to pin point where the sound is coming from!

Is it making noise while you are moving--stopped--or both....If its a high pitched tinny sound..a clamp or heat shield may be loose.
Like I said before..get under it and bang around on the exhaust system..you may get lucky with a FIND!!!

i got the whole exhaust system from another truck. so its all hooked up the the hangers like stock with stock rubber hangers. it was done by a shop and all. i also had 2 extra hangers welded in.

i have allredy pinpointed that its coming from the muffler. its not real high pitched its actualy though to describe. and it only happends above 2,500 RPMs..also its not as noticible when your drving. but when you rev it in park its very noticible.

i'll mess with it some more tomarrow. thanks though!

That's why you only buy new exhaust parts.

Unfortunately you normally have to get burnt once before you are leary of some junkyard parts :) And after all the trouble with that PITA hanger :hammer:

well now today the sound is less..im going to go over it again. but im hoping somthings just cought somwhere and its working itself out.

I knew it!

This has nothing to do with this thread, but us that went to the All Ford Nationals got our ass handed to us by a guy trying to cell a '98+ exhaust from an Expo.

Please Explain

well after doing alittle more drving its almost gone..its the damnedst thing..im still gonna look over it though.

well i was wrong..looks like its the first cat thats making the noise. not the muffler. i had somone hold on the gas at the RPMs it was making noise at and i crawled under it. so i know stock cats are like $$$$ so wold it be a better idea to replace it with a hi-flow one? and leave the other cat?

I have not had a convertor come apart inside..I have seen them cracked and melted.
Take it back to the muffler shop and have them take a look at it...that would simplify this process of elimination!!!!

yeah..im not going to drive it untill i can atleast get it looked it..but the sound is for sure coming from the first cat.

I had one come apart and melt inside my exhaust pipe once. (old car long ago) I removed the part that was left and what I could find in the pipe between the cat and muffler and still had a rattle. I ended up pulling the muffler and shaking it until it fell out.
