I love my Mountaineer to death.. i really doo.. Shes only three years old and I don't wanna flame on her but, shes pissing me off!!! One of my frenz who's owned his Ex for like ten years tells me the same, "I love my ex, but they start nickel and diming you".. I find that soo true.. in the past three years I've Dropped a transmission, replaced guage lights, lose my HID display on my radio, replace my rear passenger lock and now my driver side door handle and lock!!!! When will it ever stop.. I mean talk about "Built Ford Tough".. I've only had this baby for three years... My dad's work truck is a 87 Nissan Pathfinder and the only time he's ever had replace anything on that is the rear window, which i accidently threw a baseball at when I was a child... I dunno but i mean, I take care of her, and she keeps on needing new things.. I LOVE FORD..

sorry to hear that. sometimes you get good ones sometimes you dont. i had 2 mustangs up to almost 100,000 miles and both needed nothing. but i can understand your point. maybe try another since you love fords or stick it out a little while longer. if i was in your shoes id stick it out and if no luck try and get another one.

yeh.. i might just stick it out for awhile.. You ever hear of that "MONDAY through Friday truck theory"??? like if ur truck was built on a monday, the workers who built it, werent thinking straight because they had a hang over.. and the trucks being built on a friday, the workers working on that truck that day were too buzy thinking of partying that night.. and the trucks that were built on a wednesday are the ones that are perfect? I'm guessing My Mountaineer was built on a sunday, by a Chevy factory worker!!!!!! ERR!!!

yep i have heard of that. good luck man.

Go get something besides ford then... it aint workin for ya....

i think thats his problem he dont want to i think hes just venting. but yeah if thats what you think you want to do try it. but lemons are everywhere.

I'm thinkin about gettin a ranger and throwin a long travel kit on that if by the end of summer i cant find someone to do it on my mountaineer.. anyone interested in buying my mountaineer from me? i'm thinkin like around 17,000? hehe

It is strange my Sport is a 2000, and I have had next to zero problems. ( knock, knock )
Thus far all under warrenty. It expired in Feb. so I am on my own. I am doing as much PM as I can.

I hear ya.. and its not gonna get better.. my 97 is on its 2nd transmission and will probablly need a 3rd before 100k miles, I've gone through 4 rear driver side door lock solenoids, 3 a/c clutches, more than 4 sets of seat rails for my power seats, my remote entry hardly ever works, and I have this and that bulbs that have gone out, some of which I haven't replaced

I dont know if anything else is better.. a friend of mine who owns a jeep.. when asked how it is.. would respond "jeep means just empty every pocket" I'm sure theres one for ford chevy dodge etc.

the only real thing that bothers me out of my list of replacements is the transmission. I can excuse little things like lock solenoids, but I think that a transmission that lasts less than 100k miles is inexcusable

Seriosuly guys - complaining about bulbs going out? That's like getting mad at Ford because your X needs GAS!

A transmission under 100k if treated right is one thing to complain about, 2 is a downright lemon on the part. But, I don't think you can expect any machine as complex as a car or truck, no matter if its a Mercury Mountaineer or Acura RL to be 100% reliable.

My Mom's 97 RL (which is supposed to be on the top 5 most reliable cars list ) has only 60,000 on it, and the passenger side window doesn't go down, radio just stopped working (not a fuse), it makes a noise over bumps, and there is a funky smell coming from a the rear  And half the interior lights are out. No one in my family is complaining, those are all part of wear and tear. Sad part is, working on an RL makes working on the X look like child's play. Oil changes on it are a nightmare because of all the factory plastic body cladding - no place to put the jack or jackstands.

My point is that these Explorers seem pretty darn reliable considering what we can do with them!

ur right to a point boatbuilder, but i mean.. a three year old truck starting to piece by piece explode all over the place is outrageous.. they dont make cars like they used too... sorry, i'm just venting..

I'm not complaining about any of it except the transmission here.. I know most of it has to happen sooner or later, thats just the way things are

and I dont mind anyone complaining about their trucks either.. it makes me feel better that mine isn't bullet proof to know its not the only one

2002 Honda Accord : @ 750 miles, car shudders @ 30 mph. Take to Honda dealer. Dealer says : "No problem, leave it here, we'll have new transmission here in morning and changed by evening.".

2001 Chevy P/U w/ Duramax diesel: @ 3200 miles cylinder head warps and blows head gasket. Dealer says "No problem, leave it here and we'll swap engines tommorow".

What's going on here?

Simple.... Factories don't want the feds, recallls and NBC Evening News to bad rap their vehicles so problems with a run batch of vehicles that are trash will not reflect on the hundred thousand others that are ok.

Wear items are acceptable components to have to replace but THREE transmissons?

Either you are doing something very abusive or you have absolutley no business going to Las Vegas tables.

My '91 Sport went 172,000 with only bushings, belts exhaust and brake components to replace.

My '93 has gone 155,000 with only the same items (I had to torque the intake on it to keep it from sucking oil and producing the dreaded pinging problem that is so often misdiagnosed)

My '96 Limited had the lousy factory nightmare radiator with automatci self seprating tanks to core problem this winter when it was 10 degrees here but other than that, no problems @ 120,000...

I've replaced about four transmissions on X's over the last nine years and it's a job that I wouldn't want to do without being paid, i.e., MY X....

I've read lots of horror stories on X trannys but I've always had the transmissions FLUSHED not drained on all my vehicles going back to my '68 Stang GTA 390 w/ C6 to my '97 Probe GT with Mazda auto....

Very close tolerances do not allow for friction plate garbage and goo and you have to be especially observant of tranny flushing if you live in a hot climate.

Sorry to hear about your bad luck.

Maybe detail you Neer and sell it and get an identical one with a few less miles and see if you experience the same problems.

Drink six beers and rent the movie "Christine" based on Stephan King novel to apprediate a "Friday Car".

Good luck...

Dr Ron

I can't really seem to grasp the concept of some one complaining bout a bad tranny either. Unless you clearly state "I always drive very carefully, I am the only owner of my truck, its never been beaten or redlined" then i don't think we can really believe that the trannys are reallyy really weak, yes i will admit that they probably aren't the best, but come on, My friend with his 98 chevy lumina is on his 3rd tranny, he beats that thing to death, and hasn't learned a damn thing yet. So if you beat your car like my friend, don't complain about it breaking... I'm not saying thats what everyone is like, i'm sure there are some totatlly bunk trannys out there, and things do just go bad sometimes... but Like my dad always says "It'll never last unless you take care of it." i dunno just thought i'd post this here

yea I knew you'd all point the finger at me and label me a bad driver..

ok then.. my 1st transmission was replaced at 54,9** in 2001 the problem was that it was very sluggish, and would shift hard and jerk when I touched the gas, and jerk again when I let off the gas, IMMEDIATLEY after the transmission swap. like a day later it was doing the exact same things.. I take it to the shop, tranny specialist that authorized the replacement says "the 4R70W is a bad transmission, its just picky, you have to put up with it" he also tells me "I think it shifts d@mn sporty, I wouldn't change a thing"

the shifting gets worse and the truck continues to be slow.. I go to the dealership 4 more times on this issue until the guy who test drove it and told me it was "d@mn sporty" decides I need to be put in my place as a know nothing customer gets in my face blah de blah, dont know what you're talking about, blah blah, I'm ASE you're not, blah blah blah "all that **** you put on it is probablly whats wrong anyway"

take it to a tranny shop who drives it a constant speed for 30 minutes, says its fine.. tells me its a qyuart low on tranny fluid.. puts fluid in it, charges me $1.75 for the fluid, I drive it home.. it feels like I'm driving in sand.. totally boggy and unresponsive, worse than before.

Have it floor dynoed on a dynojet 4 dyno runs yeild 4 signifigantly different power ratings (123 146 153 and 172 or somewhere abouts)

after that I went broke spending money on this truck, so I stopped going to shops, its gotten worse, it shifts up and down while going at a constant speed on an even smooth road

I got the truck when it was new, 15 miles on the clock, current mileage is about 75,000 I was 15 when my parents got the truck for me, I learned to drive in it, I took the test in it, I take it on vacation, I drive it every time I leave this house. I did not ever push the truck hard until about 2 years ago when the truck started feeling slow and I started having trouble with traffic.. I then found my 0-60 to be 10 seconds at best, 16 at worst, I started watching my rpms closer, trying to keep them down, but at the same time trying ot see what keeps up to other drivers average rpm to keep up with other drivers is 3500 rpm on a take-off my average mpg is about 12 worst is 9 best is 15 (this is on road)

would you like some more information? up until the last year or so I was not hard on my vehicle at all.. the only reason I am now is becasue you have to be to get out into traffic and to merge/pass etc. etc.

i'm not labeling anyoen a "bad driver" i'm just saying don't beat a car and expect it to run 110% for ya.... and that was not aimed toward you, just a general comment

Its all about the PLANT

I think its all about the manufacturing plant, some prob just do a crappy job on putting cars together... Thats why it can be the same car, and some has problems the other doesnt

I have a Explorer Sport Trac, and the thing just impresses me more and more everyday, i went offroading, and HUNG WITH ALL THE JEEPS, i did just about everything they went through, and i am completely stock almost, just have heavy duty shackles on the back.

www.offroadworld.net/tulsasporttrac for pics of it

well mine was made in louisville kentucky.. although.. my 2nd transmission was assembled here at a lincoln merc. dealer in augusta.. or should I say.. THE lincoln merc. dealer in augusta
