I messed up :( rebuild or junk it?

I just think you should go pull an engine out of a 5.0 in the junkyard. Good luck. Check around the junkyards, the ones here in Ogden want around $250 if they do the work, $150 if you do the work to pull the engine out.

yeah i called around and the places around here they want 500 for them and , they dont have any around... wht do u think i should sell it for ? kelly blue book says http://www.kbb.com/used-cars/ford/e...|true|2731613|true|287797|true&mileage=282000

who knows?

plus i dont have 500 $ right now..... so if i sold my car i would take tht money and buy the truck for 800, then take the other 1000 or so and put it into the truck for a lift and tires then save the rest for insurance, its a 82 silverado with rebuilt 350 engine.... he just need room for his new silvy

Thats pretty expensive for lifters and i doubt all would need to be swapped out.

Replacing them, if i remember correctly, involves pulling the heads. So whatever you need in parts add atleast $500 more for labor to remove the heads and then new head gaskets. It adds up quick. Probably spend about the same dropping in a used motor, which may have a short warrenty.

ill throw out there, especially since it got wet.. maybe a cracked exhaust manifold ?? They crack with regular use so if it was at operating temp then submerged, it could have cracked.
My EX has an exhaust leak, either manifold or egr and it sounds alot like one lifter tapping.

well i acutely drove to a mechanic tht specializes n engines, he said its a pin in the lower engine, not just as simple as the lifters :( i dont know i might brake the engine down and look for my self, he said though tht it is easyiest just to get a used engine, he said i would be more for him to go in there and fix it himself. so i dont know. i found tht advanced auto has the liftors for 13 a piece. so if it is a liftor i can fix it . but the guy was pretty convinced it was to loud to b a liftor.... aghhhh i dont know :'( im 16 n i gotta pay for all my stuff ... n have no job this summer lol... ahhh i dont kno some of my friends tht do car work said sell the thing and try to get another car... but i like my X to much:rolleyes: who knows ima ask the mechanic again tommrow specificaly wht was wrong with it... look up those parts and then come on here and ask how hard it is to fix.... but then again its got 282,500 miles on it so engine needs to be replaced soon ne ways...ahhhhh dont know wht todo!!! replace ? or sell n get older but new truck, then i would have more money then i got now too, aghhh WHT TO DO?

Check inventory in the local junkyards by CLICKING HERE.
I can find used 5.0's with under 80,000 miles on them for $350 in my area. I don't know, nor can anyone tell, where you are as it is not listed under your name.
Also, may I ask that you PLEASE use the correct spelling and punctuation when typing on the forum? It is alot easier for us to read versus the "text speak" sometimes used. Thank you.

If your only 16, rip that ####er apart... no better time to learn.

Not telling you what to do but id take my chances on fixing the exploder than driving an 82 Cheby...

I bought a 85 mustang gt when i was 16 cuz it was the right price. Come to find out it needed head gaskets on both sides and a timing chain. Took a few months to save for parts but between my dad and my Haynes manual, i got it going...

Do be intimidated, hell these days u can take digital pics as you go lol...

What I would do is put some heavy wt oil in her and new filter and run it at idle for an hour. See if she free's up and notice the noise slowly going away. What could it hurt anyway. All these mechanics are going to tell you it is a waste of time and hoping you just say ###### it and sale it to them pennies on the dollar in hopes that you are dumb enough to do it. I have done worse and after a good clean out and some heavy wt oil, let it run at idle and no load. Then after a hour of running, let cool down and change the oil (low wt this time) and filter again. And I was able to savage the engine. But not all cases work out that way, but worth a shot. No way would I sell because of this, unless you have no attachment to the Xplorer and do not care about it. I am too much of a dreamer when it comes to Xplorer's. Good luck

 haha i know what u mean, but i have no money this summer since landscapin is hard, n i have to pay bills on commercial equipment.... and with workin on the chevy would b a lil easier because it using simpler parts... etc. but i might brake the engine down and see if i can tell whats wrong myself.... and just for the hell of it, but school starts up in 15 days so i dont know.... the 82 silverado has a perfect body, dont know what the inside looks like though.... ahh who the hell knows. im stuck :( got no money now, but if i sell it id have money to restore wht broke on the other truck and have plenty of money left over.... i dont know.. if i put it u for sale and got 2,500 id take it in a heart beat, cuse the car aint worth it... supposedly what 2 car dealerships said as i went back home from the mechanic shop... :/ who knows

You may want to go with a 15 to 20w-50, or 10w30 with a oil additive like Marvel or Lucas or Gunk motor flush or Sea Foam, Sea Foam is an excellent additive to oil. Let it run at idle, no reving or anything, just in park, and then flush the motor and re-add new oil and try again, on the second time around, add a engine restore additive like Lucas, or Marvel, or Rislone. Cheap effort to see if it will clear out with a good flush or two.

yeah i added marvel cleaner to it, and before i put seafoam through it.. i do have some lucas stop leak .... but dont want to put that in since its a stop leak formula, but i dont know...ne other ideas if tht dont work?

Here is the first thing that came to mind when I read your first post, if you ended up shutting it down after the tapping, it maybe something as simple as a oil pump tube screen clogged up and not allowing the oil to pump through. When you had the water contamination, it may of filled the oil pan enough to gather debris that was setting on the bottom of the pan to hit the strainer and clog the screen up and impede the oil pick up and starving the engine from lubricating itself. Especially with as many miles you have on it. That would be the first thing I would look at above all other suggstions. If it is the problem, then replace and replace oil and filter and try again to run it at idle and the noise should go away. Make sure you clewan out the pan real good, since this is what causes the strainer to clog up.

yeah but as i said before i as soon as i got out of the hole, i drained the oil and replaced oil and air filter, then before i out the new filter in ran about half a quart through the thing with the plug off to kinda get rid on the any thing in there, and the oil that came out after i did that was pretty clean. but the last mechanic took it too said it was part of the deep engine that it was a type of pin? just curios how would replace the oil a 2nd time after the incident fix a pin in the deep engine? i mean he could be wrong? i might just brake then engine down myself and look at it, or maybe get more opinions about the engine from other mechanics... thanks any other ideas?

Wrist pins are what holds the piston to the connecting rod. It doesn't get much deeper into the engine than that

well the mechanic tht i took it too the specializes in engines was sayin to just get a new engine?he said it would be outrageous in cost for the labor, which makes since, i think im goin to see if i can drive my car into the house , and brake the engine down see wht everything looks like.... any good engine cleaners?

Fix it. Your not going to get the amount of money you think you are by selling it with a bad engine. You are better off doing what I think 90% of the people on here have told you to do and put a used engine in it. You can find good low mileage engines for around $500 and put it in yourself. It is cheaper than buying something new cause you would be lucky to get $1000 for your truck the way it is if it is in decent shape and if your running it through deep water without any kind of mods for doing that i doubt its in great shape. Not trying to be rude but Ive read through this thread and just seems like you asked for advise and arent taking any of it. Just my .02cents

yeah sorry about tht, its just time are hard right now, no job, no money, i have no money right now for a used engine..im goin to do a few test tht i figure out that i can do to help see wht it is... then try to brake the engine down and fix wht ever it is, so it doesn't tick, then sell it...but nothing official, i just dont have money for a used engine... only thing officail is tht im goin to brake the engine down, hopefuly the car fits in my basement.... or its goin to a friends house well maybe garage who knows, thanks and i know wht u mean , but i dont have moeny to run heavy wt oil through it , then put new oil in it.... i mean i replaced the oil and filters with the cash i made tht day mowin a yard...thanks and sorry though

Where you located ?? Browsing my local craigslist found a 90 mustang 302 with 84k miles for $250. It was a long block too so by selling or scraping what you dont need youd get a few bucks back. Deals are out there.

Get a couple of books or read up online before you dig into the motor. Label and store everything.

Once helped a friend redo a high mileage 302. Cleaned everything with oven cleaner, pressure washed, honed the cylinders by hand, cleaned again ,put pistons back in with a $77 summit ring and bearing package. He splurged for a new oil pump lol but it was a strong runner until it sold.

Ok, buy a beater, for like 300 bucks... drive it like you stole it.
Pull and rebuild the 302 yourself... it isn't that hard as long as you have help and a good manual to go by. That's what I did with the 302 I got for my swap which had 276K on it, runs like a champ now.
So remove the insurance and everything from the explorer, put PLPD on the beater(GEO or something fun(5sp) and good on gas) and let the explorer be down for a couple of months.

Another thing you could do is sell some stuff... like the subs you have... get 100 bucks or more for them.
