Hey all, Im new and need big big help.

1) im losing oil pressure bad. here is a quick idea of what it looks like

when i start the car.. heres what it looks like on oil pressure

[white box] [___no*rmal___] [red box] star is where my oil pressure is

after driving about 2 miles (if that) heres what it looks like

[white box] [*___normal___] [red box]

took it to the mechanic and he replaced the head gaskets, and said it was fixed, its wasnt. i took it back, he put heavier oil in it, said i had nothing to worry about, said it was normal, but its not.

also, im leaking coolant BAD, its coming from above the passenger side wheel well area. dunno where it is.

BUT more importantly, I have to go across state for college, and i have a lifter knocl (sounds like it) and 192k miles on my engine (its a '92 XL by the way)

I was talkin to a mechanic buddy of mine, and i wanna do an engine swap, but i dont know what kind of engines i can swap cheaply. I know i can get another 4.0 from the salvage yard for about 250 bucks and i have the money for it now, but i only have about 350 bucks, and i need this done soon, so anyone who has any advice please please please respond here or at cwbyup22@hotmail.com

thanks in advance to everyone.:salute:

First, get a new mechanic.

Secondly, do you have a knock? or a lifter tick?

a knock, you need a new engine or a rebuild. Are you losing oil? Or does the pressure just go down after driving a short distance?

Thirdly, the coolant leak, i don't know how it'd come from ABOVE your passenger wheel well, but check the upper radiator hose, make sure everything is clamped down tight.

Another 4.0 is the cheapest swap, for 350 bucks i don't think you'll be able to do anything else.

Sorry but you're not exactly giving much information.

Hey Jake, welcome to the site!

Often when your engine starts out with a normal oil pressure then gradually gets lower while your drive, the problem is the pressure sending unit. The sending unit will develop a pin-hole in it's rubber diaphram. I would check your oil pressure with a different gauge. I have a cheap oil pressure gauge in my tool box just for those occations.

I would not run a thicker oil in my engine than it called for, and regarding the coolant leak, if a mechanic replaced the head gaskets and you now are leaking coolant, I'd be taking it back to him.

Good luck.

its likely the oil pressure sensor for your gage or the wire to it. You can install a mechanical oil pressure gage and never have to guess again

How many miles on the engine?

???

Lifter don't knock, they tap...

A knock is normally much more...

Is it quiet while the gauge shows high pressure, then knocks/taps when it goes down? That might be a bad thing.

the car has 192000 miles on it. and the lifter is a tap not a knock, when i speed up, it taps faster, sometiems goes away for 2-3 seconds and comes back.

it leaks a tiny bit of oil now, not much.

the coolant leak i think may be coming from the heater box, because today, smoke started coming through my defrost on the windshield. and the engine temp rose to above where its consistantly at.

i dunno what info you guys need to help me out so just ask me and ill type it for ya'll

also, how much is that oil guage you were talkin about? id like to install it..:navajo:

on this, the "white box" and "red box" should be swapped on both. my fault.

Sounds like you have a collapsed lifter, they will varnish up after years. I have been told there are additives that claim to remove the varnish and allow them to operate better.
Make sure you are running the proper oil and use a Ford oil filter. Other's claim that they have had tapping and using the Ford filter has made it better...

I would say that you need a new heater core. Rock Auto has them cheap.

Those aftermarket oil gauges are cheap, under $20. You could just buy a replacement sending unit though...

Good luck.
