I have my intake ripped down to the heads so I can replace my intake gaskets. Does anybody have any preferred solvents that they use for cleaning up oil, grime, and dirty parts? I have lots of things I would like to clean including gasket surfaces before putting stuff back together. I have used several things in the past, but I thought I would see what everyone else is using.

Plus, what would you recommend for the intake gasket and valve covers? RTV silicone, etc?

I use one of the degreasers you mix with kerosene. Stuff works wonders. Even though I've been using it for years, the name escapes me now (senility!!!)....

I just use one of the parts washers at work, but you can get any type of automotive degreaser. Like Simple Green! Just wet it, spray the chemical, let it sit and maybe scrub a little for hard stuff - and you should be good to go.

You will probably have to use a scrapper for that situation.

Good luck ....

Iv'e been using the cheapest Paint Thinner I can buy for about 20 years. Got it in my Parts Washer I got from Harbor Freight with no problems. For degreasing first its the Paint Thinner then a rinse with plenty of hot water and a complete dry - followed by some rust preventative. Tried the water based stuff in washer but just didn't do the job like Paint Thinner. Caution - the stuff is very flamable and it does slowly evaporate from the washer.
