i think i killed my motor. kinda 911 thread

FYI: In the future any time you put an electrical sender into a metal/conductive housing use pipe dope instead of teflon. The teflon will prevent an accurate reading and will leak when you dont put it on right.

it did leak, and it didnt read correctly. i fail at life.

well earlier, my father and i put the stock sending unit back in, cranked it over... AND!!!!!! the noise was ALOT quieter, but definitely still there. it may have been quieter due to the oil being thick. i stuck my ear in different corners of truck, and underneath it is hard to say where it is coming from because the exhaust seems to amplify the sound. but on top of the motor, it sounds like its comnig from below the oil cap.... and you know what happens to be right under the oil cap? a chain.. a big fat one. i'm going to go out on a limb and say its my timing chain. i stuck my ear towards the back of the motor, and it sounded quiet.

when i was calling around, one of the shops thought thats what it was and said it would be 25-30 buck per timing chain(x2) plus 210 labor for both. i dont know if they know that the motor needs to be pulled for the rear chain. another thing is I did the 00-m-12 kit and it has a cam tensioner in it, is the new tensioner the cause? this is just weird because it happend so fast.

Id say you should just go buy a low mileage junk yard motor, and swap it in yourself. The first time I blew up the 4.0 in my 92, It only took me around 5 nights to replace the motor by myself. Be aware that I was 16, and I had never worked on a motor before. Swaping a motor isnt really all that hard

OR..................you could swap in a 302........

well this noise does not sound engine life ending to me, first get a real diagnosis from somebody who can find the problem, its a hell of alot cheaper and easier to fix the front tensioners and redo the chains then itis to go swapping engines, especailly when the next one could have the same issue.

i'm calling ford today to setup an apointment for tomorow. having the chain tensioners and guides replaced is definitely cheaper than a new motor.

ford called and said it would be about $1000 for new timing chains, guides, and tensioners with labor, and i will still have low compression in cylinders 4 and 6(probly killed the piston rings when i put too much oil in), and my oil pump is shot.

new long block plus labor = $4300 (missing water pump and wires)
water pump = $180
wires = $90
BOTTOM LINE = $4,570 + tax (aprox. $4,800)

I'll have a 36/36 warranty on everything dealing with the motor.
but i won't have a vehicle for another week
oh.. and i'm gonna be broke as hell for the next 8 to 10 months unless i can get this job with exxon/mobil in their machine shop division. they pay %100 tuition for 3 years, i get to work 40 hours a week during the summer and 20 a week during the school year. if i get that job, i'll have the truck paid off in half the time.

Wowsers, $5K for a new engine, better hope your trans holds up, for LESS then that amount you could buy a V8 drivetran, swap out the output shaft for the T case, put your T case behind the trans and bolt it into your truck...

Good luck!

My friend with a 95 overheated his OHV, I dropped a junk yard OHV in there for under $700, the quote he got was about $5500 to rebuild his engine and install.

i dunno man, i think you'd be better off gettin a junk yard motor and installing it, instead of 5k for a motor instal etc. Bien in Debt or broke is a *****

i dont have the time for a motor swap myself. the damn sohc is the reason its so expensive. i checked out fastpartsnetwork and for just the short block they wanted like 3300, the 5.0 and 4.0 were 1800 i think. probly why the junk yards want 850 around here for a used motor. its done. i gave them the go ahead. it'll be pretty much a new truck. if the trans goes.... well i'll have to get that replaced and owe my parents even more money.

my parents are being pretty cool as far as me having to pay them back. they won't stick me with payments that leave me with no money after gas and car payments. but lets hope i get the exxon/mobil job because i dont like owing anyone money.

even pay a local shop/mechanic $500+ to swap out engines is going to be cheaper. Remember the engine lasts longer then the trans typically (usually), so the thought process here is you are going to still be paying for your new engine when your trans blows up, and now you are WAY upside down on your truck.

Now I know all this talk is in a perfect world and sometimes you gotta bite the bullet, believe me, but its still good to discuss it and I know what its like to be upside down on a vehicle, but if you plan to keep it forever it doesnt really matter :)

i plan to keep it forever. i love my truck. the ONLY reason i went ahead with a new motor over a used one is the warranty. 3 years i don't have to worry about my motor breaking down. and surprisingly brand new ford block + installation was cheaper than any shop that installs jasper remans + installation.

seriously if i had the time, i would have swapped in the junk yard motor with updated intake gaskets, cam tensioner and timing chain guides. plus wires, plugs, belts, hoses, i'd be over 1000 which is still ALOT cheaper than having ford do it, but i dont have the time. i have work and school all week, so only my weekends are free

oh well. As for your truck and keepin it forever, im on the same boat. I love my truck, never ever ever never would i sell it.

But good luck on the fix. Tell us what happens k.

Amen to that! I had Monmix staring at me like I had two heads the one time he asked me if I'd sell Jack for a million dollars. I said a billion wouldn't make me get rid of my explorer and I meant it. Nor will he ever leave my possesion again while I can still draw breath :D

Good luck Aric, I hope the install is fast for you!

Long Block plus install $4,805
3 year 36k waranty
new plugs wires, pumps, etc.
only things that aren't new are the intake and everything not attached to the motor(ie, radiator, winshield fluid tank, battery, etc.)
Oh and they even gave me a FREE multipoint inspection

but it purs like a mean little kitten. no more exhaust leak, but i believe there is something rattling in my cat. sounds like the timing chain thing, but it doesnt go away after start up and its not speed variable at all, and its not very loud, but i'll take care of it when i get a chance. someone on this forum posted that Ford charged them $30 to clean the cat for them... I'm sure my mechanical abilities are up for this task.

Congrats on getting your truck back.
