So, fiddling with the dying Explorer and replaced the PCV. No improvement. So I start back at square one and start looking at the vacuum line and IAC. I take off the block under the IAC that attaches to the manifold and give it a squirt with solvent and blow through it to make sure it's not blocked. Seemed ok. I also cranked down the screws on the IAC to make sure it was nice and tight, and got about 1/8 of a turn out of both of them. Started it up and the noise seemed to be quieter, but still present.

My questions are: my IAC came with 2 gaskets, 1 paper and the the rubber figure 8 one. Could the paper one be letting air through? Am I suppose to use both?

Also, can that block under the IAC cause the humming if one of the ports is clogged? What I mean, has anyone heard of that before?

I just yesterday pulled mine off and saw that the brass insert in the intake where the iac bolts down was sticking out just a hair from the intake. I put the second gasket on that came with the iac and it stopped.

as far as humming goes, my iac hummed after i cleaned it (the old one). I got the new one on there and the humming stopped.

Pull the plastic cap off, clean thefelt filter under the cap. Using a snall wire brush, scrape some of the crud off the intake side.

Good to know! I was worried about breaking that cap when I was messing with it.
