Can anyone tell me definitively what causes the o/d light to come on and continue to flash, along with the check engine light? There are so many sensor possibilities. If everyone who has had this occurrence would post what cleared it (and what didn't) maybe we could come so some clear and exact reasons for the problem and then work on how to fix it.

Just a thought

Anybody?

Gary

from another post:

Does the o/d on/off light flash when this happens? I beleive what you are describing here is "failsafe mode". This happens when the computer detects any sort of tranny fault, and it gives you enough time to "limp" to the dealer for service

Welcome to the site Gary.

If you perform a search (check signature below) you will find some more information on the flashing O/D light. Essentially, it isn't the greatest thing you want to see your truck do. How many miles do you have on your X and have you had your transmission serviced regularly?

Good luck and I hope everything works out.

Welcome again and happy posting!:)

I bought the vehicle less than a year ago with 165,000 miles. A lot of miles, 100 freeway miles roundtrip by a reserve police officer friend of mine everyday). All service done at the dealer (even to install the bug deflector) with all documentation.

I am not sure what Tranny service you are referring too but the fluid was changed about a year before I bought it.

Thanks for the tips and I will continue to search the web for any information. There sure is a lot of conjecture as to the problem; from the gas cap to the instrument cluster (I replaced with another - not the problem), to any one of 10 sensors feeding the PCM...

Whew - almost as bad as my Rx7 (OK nothing is that different).
