The facts: 2005 Explorer XLT, 4.0, 85,000 mi. Check engine light came on. Code is P0506 (idle air control system RPM lower than expected). It seems I don't have an idle air control valve on my model year. One site said to clean the MAF sensor. I did that yesterday. The code is still on. Question: Do I need to reset the code or should it turn off automatically if the MAF was the issue.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Dan

I dont know if it will clear by itself once the problem is corrected (if in fact that was the problem) but I can tell you that it will not take long for the code to reappear if the problem was not solved.

We have an 04 XLT and recv'd the same code yesterday and we cleared it to see if it would return and it was back on by this afternoon. -- sorry i dont have more info for you on this... we are going through the motions on this code right now ourselves :)

A problem likely exists with the drive motor for the throttle plate, which I know little about. It controls idle air quantity entering the engine. It may be binding, or experiencing some similar sort of mechanical problem. Or, the throttle plate itself may be at fault. Perhaps someone here has more experience with drive by wire. imp
