I have a A4LD in an Aerostar tried to "flush" trany as in sticky but no ATF came out. How would this effect how the trany operates? I have the lines going to rad then to small cooler in front. I do not have remote filter yet. van has 260000Km on it. I have had the van for just 15000Km. ATF and filter changed when I first got the van. ATF was dark when I got the van.

any info would help, thanks

The cooler's circulation is very important. It will affect the way it shifts, and cools the fluid. Did you remove the pressure line which is the lower line or the upper line which is the return line? # 52 in my list of useful threads has a chart. Here's the link: http://transmichigan.com/html/cooler_line_id.html.

dont use ATF use Mercon IV in your A4LD (check the owners manual)

ATF is different

The cooler lines are critical, the cooler flow is critical. All fluid is pumped through them, they must be clear. Flush them or replace them. An additional cooler would be wise, it is smart to add a cooler to any vehicle, whether it has one or two already.

Unfortunately ATF has become simply a common term to say "automatic transmission fluid." People should stop that, those initials should only describe that old obsolete fluid, because cheap trans fluid often is labeled ATF, whether it is some Dexron or Mercon stuff. Thus do not buy anything labeled ATF.

Mercon fluid is now obsolete, it is illegal for any manufacturer to make it. Mercon V is now the recommended fluid for any Ford that required Mercon. That link above should in some way annotate this change. Good luck,

line removed and Mercon IV

My mistake I did use Mercon IV not ATF. I thought ATF ment (A)utomatic
(T)ransmision (F)luid. The line I removed was the bottom line off the remote trany cooler. It went into a bucket. Will have to check if it leads back to lower transmission output or not. If nothing comes out of the lower line what does this mean? Low pressure? Parts need replacing?

thanks for all the info

Not much fluid should come out in total. I thought that this was in some way while running. Is this about the method that some people have used to run the engine with a trans line loose, in a bucket?

more info found out

hi
It turns out that the return line was in the bucket. Got a quot on a rebuilt trans most hard parts (Up graded at that), torque converter included, and install for 2048.00 Cdn not including taxes or cooler if needed. Same trany not installed 1750.00 Cdn not including taxes. So I have some thinking and saving to do.
