2003 Sport Trac
I was wanting to buy a 2001 sport trac with 75000 miles. I dont go off road to anything, just buying it for space, need/want a smaller lighter truck, and because i really like the style of it. i took the vehicle to a mechanic that my family trusts and knows and he checked it out and said everything was fine but two things. The lady that owns it now its a 50 year old lunch lady that just drives from home to work. she said she has never used 4x4 low or put the key into the keyhole on the door to open the door. The mechanic said since 4x4 low was never used then it doesnt work and he also said you cant open the door with the key now either. is this legit, or is this guy trying to bullshit me??? I was all over this car and very excited until he fed me that line and now i dont know what to do. I need help and suggestions!

Did you try it? It is possible, but for the key, if you sprayed some lube in there and worked it around it should work, and worst case for the 4x4 low is get a new shift motor.

i will be trying it this weekend. The owner is going to give it to me for a whole day to just go through a normal day and just drive and test out whatever i want. how much does a **** motor run around?

I never used the key in any door for about 8 years because the truck had an aftermarket alarm with keyless entry. Then about two years ago the alarm crapped out and I was forced to start using the key. The locks were very stiff, but I got the lock lube and squirted in all 3 locks and worked them loose. So, I think your mechanic is being overdramatic about it.

For 4x4 low, take it in the dirt and try it out. Remember, you need to stop and shift to N before switching into Low range. Same thing when you want to shift back to High range.

We got my son a used Mustang two years ago and I had to take it to a body shop to have the door and truck lock cylinders removed, then take them to a locksmith to be rebuilt. Just sayin'....
As far as 4wd and 4-Lo, you won't know until you try. To go into Low Range you must be stopped, gearshift in neutral, and foot on the brake. Then switch to Low Range, and it might take a few seconds. The 4-Lo light on the dash will come on. Drive it a few feet straight ahead to be sure.
