2003 explorer; put key in ignition and it wont turn. I've tried all the obvious stuff (make sure shifter is all the way in park, wiggle steering wheel). The issue happens with both keys. Is there a common cause?

I'm having a similar issue with my 02 explorer. I think the ignition is getting loose, so when mine won't turn I kind of push up on the key while pulling it out, to pull the ignition cylinder outwards then put it back in gently and it normally turns.

I have an 02 xls, and I am starting to have issues. I turn the wheel about an inch off the steering lock, insert key all the way in slowly and turn. Sometimes if I don't do it exactly like I described.....the key tries to turn, but very hard and the lights do not come on the dash right and is a pita to pull out.

Thanks for the reply. Taking your advise I was finally able to turn the key forward a tiny bit, then moved the steering wheel a bit and the key rolled forward. My guess is the steering wheel locking component and the ignition cylinder maybe worn and a bit out of sync.

This stuff works wonders on key cylinders, including ignition, door locks, latches, and hinges. Teflon seems to be the preferred lubricant with most locksmiths over graphite powder these days. Tri-Flow drip bottles come with a tiny clear tube that can reach very small places. Great light duty metal to metal lubricant, thing is the smell is highly addictive. ;)
