Ignition switch assembly getting loose

Hi all, I'm experiencing an issue with the ignition assembly on the steering column. I've done a search with some key words but couldn't find what I need.

1995 Eddie Bauer, 182,000+ miles, 4x4, Automatic transmission.

The ignition assembly (where the key is inserted) is getting loose. I'm finding it more difficult to turn the key in such a way that contact is made repeatedly and reliably.

I'd like to replace it. Don't know if this is a DIY or involves a complex dissasembly dealing with air bag etc. I'm not opposed to just taking it to the dealer (assuming this is a straightfoward replacement) but would like to know if anyone here has experience (or procedure) to share.

I'm pretty sure I know what you're talking about. If you live in a town/city that has a locksmith in the yellow pages that specializes in auto work, I they can fix it for you relatively cheap (I used to do this for seven years). Essentially, that thumb turn has broke off the switch, itself. The whole switch can be removed and then you can drill a hole thru the thumb turn into the switch and place a pin, or you can fit-up a new switch to match your current key. Either way, a competent automotive locksmith should be able to do this job fairly easily. The older switches, up through 95 (10-cut key) have this problem quite often....seen it in a lot of trucks, mustangs, etc. Interestingly, the new switch in the 96+ (what we call the 8-cut key) don't have this problem. Thanks! Do you expect any issues or precautions needed with the Airbag? I'm sure disconnecting the battery is Step #1.

I also agree that starting with an automotive oriented locksmith is a great way to start. :thumbsup:
 






Wait a minimum of 10 minutes after disconnecting the battery before working on a steering column with an air bag. The SRS module has a built in battery back up which has to discharge before working on the column.
