Hey guys!! Couple BASIC questions (dont laugh I'm new at this). I have a '92 XLT and would like to raise it. I basically just want the looks, I play in the mud and snow when I can, but nothing serious.

1)What is the difference between a suspension lift and a body lift, also what is the cost difference?
2) I would like to raise it significantly (4-6 inches?) and put big tires on it, what size tires should I look at for that kind of lift?
3) Last but not least, does anyone know of some throaty exhaust that will make my 4.0 V6 sound like a V8??
4) Oh and how much $$$ will each of these run me appx?

Thanks for helpin out a beginner, I know these must seem dumb to you guys! KEEP ON TRUCKIN!!

Matt

Welcome to the site Matt, lifts range in price from $80+ for a body up to over a $1000 for a suspension lift..To raise to the hieght You want, you are looking at upwards of $2500 by the time you add in the extras..Look around the site..Click on the members signatures and look at their rides..Decide where you want to go from there..Good Luck..

Matt - welcome aboard!
Ok - Mike is right - about $2500 or so...
You will need a lift (6" suspension is about $1500 installed) Tires and rims ($800-1200) and then to compensate for the larger tires you will need new gears - about $1000 installed. Gears are selected based on the typre of driving you will want to do. Rock climbing you will need 4.56's with either 33 or 35" tires. Mud you may go 4.10's to keep the tires spinning faster. I will tell you this is a disease - which I have, as do most others here. It's either height, speed, power, all of the above. It gets addictin! :D

Yes! An exhaust question! Ok heres what you do, you want throaty exhaust? I have yet to find a better way to maximize airflow and get that great rumble than the current method I use:

1) But a sawzall
2) proceed to cut stock exhaust off AFTER the cats
3)buy a cherry bomb
4)Bolt said cherry bomb to whats left of your stock system
5)If you dont like the rumble right under your seat you may wish to run a pipe out the back a little further.
6)Dont forget to reset your computer, and enjoy the blast at your next green light!
By the way, as far as the lifts go, Im in the same boat as you, Im looking for a lift, though I have done a little research, so I may be able to help you out. If its just looks your going for,you may want to just go for a body lift, its not as functional as a suspension lift but it gives you some clearance. But the downside is your only going to get 2-3 inches from that alone.Performance Accessories make 2 and 3 inch body lifts starting at $65 I think ,thats BEFORE labor which gets pretty pricey....Suspension lifts are great but far more expensive. As far as wheels go you need to know how big you want to go. If you go too big ,depending on your current gearing, you may have to regear your differential. At 4inches of lift ,which is what Mdrut is using(2"body 2"Susp.),31-10.50-15's look REALLY good
and you dont need to swap your gears.Id look into something like that if I were you.Hopefully this helps, and welcome to the site!

Welcome to the site. Glad you're here.
If you are looking for a bolt up exhaust, Flowmaster makes a catalytic converter back that you can get for about 160.00. They sound pretty nice, and go on in about an hour. Summit racing carries them www.summitracing.com

Well I dont have a lot of money cuz I'm only 17 so say I go with the body lift. The max I can get out of that is 3 inches correct? What are the biggest tires I can put with that? Also, do I need to get new rims too? Keep in mind I have a '92 Explorer XLT Auto tranny.

What is this stuff bout changing the gears, will I need to do that with the said 3 in body lift? I would like to put a new rear end in anyway to get better acceleration, what will that run me??

How much does a setup like Mdrut's cost??

THANKS, MATT

Bushings..$125, Body lift..$86, 2" sus. Lift..$236, Shocks..$125, tires...$350, Did all the work myself, so don't know what labor will cost you..Thanks for the kind words Jeremy..Hope this helps..P.S. It rides great

Matt,
Don't go over 31's with a 2-3" b/l. You will end up rubbing. You can run stock rims, so you'll save some $$$ there. The lift can be installed by you and a friend in about 6 hours as long as you're semi-mechanically inclined.
