Ok, i did the dumbest thing ever, and let my friend borrow my car. He decided to save gas and accidentaly put it into reverse instead of neutral on the highway. I rebuilt the trans and i dont think thats the problem. It wont shift until 4000 rpms for every gear. iv tried everything and im lost. Please help

Holy crap what a dumbsh*t.

Are you sure everything in the tranny is rebuilt correctly and the proper amount of fluid added?

Have you looked at your tranny kick down cable? maybe it needs some adjustment?

95 explorers don't have tranny kickdown cables. Make sure the fluid is red and at the proper level with the engine warm and running.

didn't know that thanks for the correction and sorry for giving bad info.

did you punch your " firiend " in the mouth ?

I did that once in my Boss' Cadillac Seville... Intentionally. Don't hate me- I was curious what kind of noise it would make. :D

6 months later he traded it in for a Lincoln Town Car. I wonder why. ;)

Wow, I guess your friend sure saved gas....I'm sure the gas wasn't as much as a new trans costs.

My brother did this to my old 95 just about 9,000 miles after i had a new trans installed. i could have killed him, but we were only doing 20 MPH in the neighborhood. He was going to try to rev the engine as we were passing his friends house. Instead he hit the reverse gear and it locked up the rear tires and stalled the engine.

As fo the shift problem, if everything looks ok I would just take it to a trans place and see what they say.

I thought that the tranny would "know" that it was in forward motion and not do anything until it was under the "right" conditions?

I did the same thing on my last tranny on accident, apparently ours theres no lockout so it will let you shift into reverse going 10-30 mph or 60 mph, lol

This has been discussed before, and I believe the consensus was that you might get away with this at 10 mph but its not a good idea at freeway speeds. ;)

95XLTex: Are you saying that you rebuilt the tranny before or after your friend decided to try his novel gas saving techniques?
