Infinity Kappa Installation

Quick question for anyone with Infinity Kappas..

Where did you mount the crossovers? I'm putting the 5x7s in my front doors and am undecided on where to put the crossovers. Are they safe mounted somewhere in the doors?

I wire-tied mine to the back of the bundle of wires that comes into the door. That bundle doesn't flex very much and will keep the crossover from rattling against the inside of the door.

i wrapped mine in foam and zip tied them to some bracket inside the actual door of my ranger. it works great. plus, after running the wire a couple days before, i wasnt about to run 4 more wires so i could mount it somewhere else

I removed the cover from the crossover and used double side sticky tape and sheet metal screws to secure it to the steel inner door panel. The tweeters are mounted the relatively flat space at the upper part of the door panel - not fun to install, mind you, whole job took at least 10 hours and that includes running new monster cable from the crossovers to the head.

mounted mine to the wires and stuff with zip ties...they don't rattle of anything...very inpressed with them..BTW, does anyone have their Kappas powered by anything else besides the HU. I am looking into getting like a 400 watt amp to power the 4 Kappas i have in the doors. Does the sound quality really take a leap or should i just be satified with the HU wattage to the speakers?

Mine are powered by a Audiobahn A4400E 75W x 4 amp. Those speakers get louder than I can stand it without any noticeable distortion. Very impressive speakers.

The Kappa's are not a very efficient speaker. No head unit produces really enough power to take advantage of the great sound potential once getting past their inefficiencies.

I plan to add a Fosgate 400.4 to my system. Crutchfield has a good price on them now and the specs look pretty good as far as s/n ratio, etc. With a good amp in place, the bottom end of the speakers should open up some.

I don't have a sub, nor do I believe in adding one. I feel a sub adds artificial bass amplification where it previously does not exist on the original recording. Sure, it sounds cool, but it's just too much unless the rest of the system is incapable of driving over the road noise. In this case, it's probably a good idea to start off with sound insulation materials.

yea...i want a 400.4 amp...but am broke right now. I also REALLY need to totally sound deaden the whole back end of my X. I get so pissed cuz it rattles so much...where can i get some good stuff...that is like cheaper than that crazy expensice dynomat stuff.

I have mine powered by an MTX RT2200 amp...getting a little over 120 per side. It sounds beautiful! You'll definitely be impressed!

I haven't found a source for cheap sound deadening material. There must be someone who has done this with something besides Dynamat. My Borla system produces some pretty loud sounds plus the wind noise, tire noise, etc. I'd like to block that out, but even with cheap material, it's a significant amount of work and time. For now, it's easier to install and amp and that's likely what I'll do - I'd do with with or without sound deadening material.

Seems like Dynamat is nothing more than fiberglas insulation with a plastic wrapper to keep the fibers out of your lungs. With that in mind, there must be other solutions - something like the insulation surrounding your dishwasher - I just installed a dishwasher and there is a type of insulation around it encased in black plastic. Finding the source of this may reveal a cost-effective way of damping road noise into the truck. Give it a shot and post your results here.

Zammer, I used high temp Mastic for my sound deadening. It's the exact same thing as Dynamat at a fraction of the price. Here's a thread I posted about it awhile back: High Temp Mastic

BTW, a good subwoofer really enhances the listening experience. Regular speakers just cannot reproduce the very bottom octave of music. By "a good subwoofer," I mean something clean and musical, not just boomy. Check out the a/d/s/ rs.2 series, Image Dynamics IDQs and the Oz Audio Matrix series to see what I mean.

I have a custom stealthbox built out of fiberglass. It has just under 1.0 cu ft of airspace which is perfect for my a/d/s/ 310rs.2 sub.
