im just about 18, and i just got as my second vehicle a very nice '95 explorer xlt, i was wondering if the engine is a SOHC or a OHV, I think on the intake it says SOHC on it but i dont remember, it has 134,000 mi on it and runs fine. also does anyone know how long explorer a 4.0L engine like mine usually lasts? i was hoping to get this engine to last for a while so i can save for a new one. Finally how skilled do you have to be to put on a 2" body lift, should i have someone else do it?

Thanks,
Dave

Dave, welcome to the site! This is the best Explorer Site on the Web!

Your 95 should have the OHV engine unless someone swapped in the SOHC. The SOHC wasn't offered until the 97 model year. As for longevity, many on this board have had their OHV's last well past 200k miles. With regular maintenance and some TLC, the engine should last you a long time. As for the body lift, I don't have any direct experience with it, but hear it is fairly easy to do in an afternoon. The hardest part is playing with the new bumper brackets to get the bumpers to mount right.

Welcome to the site!

How long will it last? It all depends on how well you take care of it. I have all the origonal parts and mine is a 91 with over 487,000 miles. hope everything works out for you! again, welcome to the site!

Welcome to the site Dave!!! You're just like me. The Explorer is my second car. I got it for graduation from high shcool. Hehe. Anyways...the engine you have should last very long so don't worry if you take care of it. As for lifts, there's a write up for it. Here's the link:

Hope this helps. Dead Link Removed

Hey thanks for the warm welcome everybody, the reason i asked about the OHV or the SOHC is that there is a very cool looking intake on ebay (blue and chrome) for SOHC explorers take a look, i dont know who makes it though. Nice forum!

I guess I don't have to worry about the engine going for a LONG time...

hi

The engine i have in there now has 135,000 original highway miles, and to my knowledge wasn't rebuilt yet. I am going to perform all the routine changes to it soon ( oil, filter, tires etc.) when the time comes how hard or impossible is it to put a SOHC engine in mine.

PS it would be nice if i got 4xx,x.. miles on my engine :-P

That topic has been discussed a few times before and I believe we decided it would be cheaper and easier to sell the Explorer you have and buy one with the SOHC already in it. Don't feel bad though, I also have the OHV and wish I had the SOHC too. :(
