Inner Tie Rod

I was just curious after reading an old post concern replacing the inner tie rod end.

What wears out, is there something internally and how do you know it's worn out? The outer tie rod would show some endplay in the knuckle.

You grab the tie rod

There is a ball joint under the boot that screws into the rack (on a 2001). You grab the tie rod and give it a tug to check for play on the rack end. There are some good photos under the boot later in that thread. Just did mine last month (along with just about the whole front end)
