I am thinking of installing my new black carpet over top of my old gray stuff. This would just give me that much more sound deadening although I have already done the floor.

Is this a good idea or is it just stupid?

why wouldnt you just remove the old stuff? also, how do you plan on attaching the new to the old? arent they clamped down by the trim panels? i dont think they will clamp down another pad of carpet on top of that....

I'd take the old carpet out, don't do 2 carpet layers.

I too, would just pull the old out, however about the trim panels not being able to hold 2 layers of carpet. I SOMEWHAT doubt another layer would stop the panel from holding it, especially the door panels that are screwed in. I have a whole mess of wires running down both sides, and although the carpet is bowed a little, the trim panels still hold it tight. But still as stated its better to remove the old carpet. Just make sure you keep the existing sound deadning material.
