Greetings guys. Have the old hunk -o- transmission out of my 2000 Explorer 4.0 sohc 4x4. Couple of questions so I don't screw up the Jasper please.

1) Jasper wants me to remove and inspect the flex plate and spacer for cracks to insure warranty.
a) Is this a good idea to do?
b) Do I need to replace the flexplate to crank bolts if I do this?
c) Do I need new Torque Converter to flexplate nuts?

2) Do I need to pull the new torque converter off the trans and fill it with Merc V to cut down on dry startup time?

I am installing a remote filter with the trans at the outlet of the aux cooler in rt frt fender well.
a) To purge lines of old crappy fluid I planned on using about 20 lbs of compressed air and blowing through both of the rubber aux cooler hoses running through the radiator and back to the trans with the trans hard lines in sealed drain bottle to cut down the mess. Does this seem ok to everyone?

b) How much trans fluid can I put into the trans for 1st start since it has to refill the lines coolers torque converter etc?

c) As a final cleaning of coolers and lines I was thinking of having the fluid return line to the trans hooked to a rubber hose pulling out of a container of clean fluid and the steel hard line dumping into a container for several quarts. to circulate clean fluid through and get rid of any impurities. Good idea or not?

Sorry this is so long winded just want to make sure I don't screw anything up.

Thanks, Steve

a) I assume that the lines will be disconnected at the transmission when you blow them out. If so, then that sounds like a good idea.

b) That would be a good idea except the 5R55E will not suck ATF from a container. If the engine is started with the input and output lines disconnected ATF will be pumped out of both lines. Twice as much ATF will exit the output line as the input line. Most members disconnect the hose at the external cooler and then pour ATF into the filler tube to replace that exiting the lines.

Thank you, I remember reading that now that you mention it but had forgotten for my particular situation. What would you guess I need to replace volume wise per time running into the trans while I'm blowing the lines? In other words can I keep up with a funnel and the dipstick tube?

too many things to watch

It's hard to watch two containers being filled with old ATF and pour new ATF down the filler tube at the same time! If you have two people you could probably do it. Most members run just long enough for a quart to drain and then turn off the engine and add a quart down the filler tube. That way the ATF is never more than one quart low.

Well I do have a helper when I do it. How long will it take to spit out a qt of trans fluid at idle? Can I initially overfill the trans to compensate? How long before the trans starts pulling fluid back in the inlet line?

flushing

In less than a minute you should get a quart out of the outlet and half a quart out of the inlet. I would not overfill more than one quart. As I said before, it will never pull fluid from the inlet. You have to put the ATF in the filler tube.

Is the flow through the coolers created by the pressure of the trans pushing through the outlet as opposed to suction at the inlet at all times then?

That's correct

Is the flow through the coolers created by the pressure of the trans pushing through the outlet as opposed to suction at the inlet at all times then?

There is no pickup for the pump at the return port. The pressure at the outlet exceeds the pressure at the inlet resulting in an external flow when the path is continuous. When the path is open, fluid exits from both ports.
